Myers Returns as PBS TechCon 2013 Sponsor

MAGIX Becomes The First DAW Manufacturer To Embrace The Music Producers Guild’s ISRC Initiative

The Music Producers Guild’s efforts to establish an industry standard for embedding ISRC data within digital music files has received a significant boost with the announcement by MAGIX Software GmbH that it will incorporate EBU (European Broadcasting Union) Broadcast WAV files in the latest software upstate for its popular Sequoia Digital Audio Workstation.

André Standke, Product Manager Sequoia, MAGIX Software GmbH, says: “For years, Sequoia has been an integral part of leading broadcast and mastering studios worldwide. We focus our attention on delivering the best sound and tools by working closely with engineers and music producers including Sterling Sound in New York, Air Studios, Alchemy Mastering in London and many more.

“As optical media is gradually replaced by file and server based audio content, we will continue to support the changes to the mastering process with innovative developments such as EBU tech3352 and we are happy to announce this feature is now incorporated into Sequoia, our number one product on the market.”

From the MPG’s point of view, the importance of ISRC cannot be understated. ISRC, which stands for International Standard Recording Code, is uniquely allocated to every song recorded. These codes are then registered with royalty payment agencies, thus ensuring that recording artists and copyright holders are properly remunerated for their work when it is played on radio or TV.

In the past the ISRC information was included within sub data streams of a CD, but in today’s digital age, where music is often stored on digital WAV files, the ability to securely associate ISRC data with specific tracks has been lost. This is because the only common way to incorporate ISRC into a WAV file is via the file name – and if someone changes the file name or it is truncated or amended by a software program, the vital ISRC information can easily go missing.

To resolve this problem, the MPG’s Mastering Group has been working closely with the EBU to develop an industry-approved method for embedding ISRC data within a WAV file. Following discussions, it was agreed that the best solution was to use was the EBU’s existing Broadcast WAV File (BWF), a variant of the traditional WAV file that was developed for use by broadcasters. The EBU has now agreed to adopt the BWF as standard so that all-important ISRC data can be securely associated with specific tracks.

MPG Mastering Group board member and Alchemy Mastering Engineer Barry Grint, who is leading the BWF initiative, adds: “MAGIX’ decision to incorporate BWF into Sequoia is a significant step forward for the MPG’s initiative and we are delighted that the company has embraced BWF as the standard specification for file exchange. The new system is simple to implement and, once adopted, it will allow ISRC to flow through the whole production chain. We now hope that other DAW manufacturers will follow suit.”

Grint adds that ISRC is set to become the cornerstone of every aspect of digital asset management, from tracking and reporting through to royalty reporting and song identification.

“The entire music industry needs a robust and secure system for identifying tracks, and who had input into their creation, so that we can safeguard the incomes of all artists and copyright owners,” he says. “Ultimately, the adoption of BWF as standard will provide a cornerstone for the MPG’s Credit Where Credit is Due campaign, which aims to highlight the woeful lack of credit information within the digital domain. Our overall goal is to ensure that all music creators receive proper credit and proper payment for their work, and having an industry-standard technical solution that allows credit information to be included in the metadata is a major step forward in achieving this ambition.”

“David Bowie is”: Sennheiser Helps the V&A Bring Together Sound and Vision

London/Wedemark – March 20, 2013 – The world’s leading museum of art and design, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, has curated a unique exhibition on one of the most influential artists of our times: David Bowie. Designed to take visitors on an unforgettable, multi-faceted journey of sound and style, “David Bowie is” will open its doors to the public on 23 March. In order to ensure the best audio experience for visitors, the V&A has worked in partnership with audio specialist Sennheiser which – alongside other audio equipment – deployed its guidePORT audio guide system and two immersive 3D sound simulations.

David Bowie has been at the forefront of the world of popular music for nearly 50 years, and his immense creativity positions him as one of the most innovative performers of all time. His work is marked by continual re-invention, intellectual depth, musical innovation and striking visual presentation. Re-tracing Bowie’s creativity and influences from all areas of art, the exhibition shows a wealth of material, including videos, stage costumes, album covers, stage sets, photographs and of course Bowie’s music. For this, the exhibition’s curators, V&A’s Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh, were given unprecedented access to the David Bowie Archive.

Sound at the heart of the exhibition

The exhibition is designed to be an immersive audio experience. Sound quality is therefore one of the most critical elements, and the organisers have drawn on the expertise and technology of audio specialist Sennheiser to craft the exhibition’s rich soundscape.

Fittingly for a tribute to an artist that has embraced technology throughout his career, the exhibition uses leading edge tools to blend sound and vision. Audio guides, powered by Sennheiser’s guidePORT system, automatically provide the music and soundtrack when visitors approach the exhibits and screens, and seamlessly integrate all sound material into the tour. The exhibition will use 550 bodypacks with Sennheiser stereo headphones, offering a simple solution that lets the visitor explore Bowie’s music, art, and style with all their senses.

While two audio events are directly stored on the visitors’ bodypack receivers – a welcome text when entering the exhibition and an “extro” when leaving – all other music and video sound is transmitted as real-time, lip-sync stereo audio from eleven twin cell transmitters. These rack-mount units are located in two control rooms that also accommodate the control PC for the guidePORT system. The visitors’ receivers automatically download the audio when they pass by the corresponding guidePORT antenna units, and “know” which track to play when they approach so-called identifiers, small trigger units placed near the exhibits – just like an indoor GPS.

“This is a fully automated yet entirely personal tour, as the exhibition can be explored in whatever order and at any pace whatsoever. The audio is always played at the right time for each visitor,” explains Norbert Hilbich, Sennheiser Application Engineering, who assisted in the set-up of the guidePORT system. Tours with a tour-guide are possible too. For this, the museum uses a convenient bodypack transmitter with a headset microphone, enabling the guides to both make tailor-made commentary for their guests and trigger any of the pre-recorded exhibition material as they like.

3D audio simulation
The audio voyage through the exhibition culminates in two extraordinary 3D audio experiences. Viewing footage of David Bowie perform live concerts and recordings filmed for TV, visitors are enveloped within a fantastically spatial performance of his music delivered by hidden Neumann and Klein+Hummel loudspeakers. This 3D sound experience is also used during Tony Visconti’s evocative “mash-up” of Bowie songs, created specially for the exhibition by Bowie’s long-term producer.

To enable both stereo and mono material to be played as a 3D reproduction, an upmix algorithm by Sennheiser’s Gregor Zielinsky was used. “We had some really old mono material, not exactly recorded under the best of circumstances”, explained Gregor Zielinsky, International Recording Applications Manager. “With the algorithm and some fine-tuning in the studio we ensured that this rare material can now be enjoyed in an astonishingly new form.”

Geoffrey Marsh, co-curator of the exhibition, said, “’David Bowie is’ will integrate over 300 objects and costumes from the David Bowie Archive with high-quality sound and video to create a seamless evocation of Bowie’s career over five decades. This is the first major UK exhibition where sound is an integral part of the interpretation. Working with Sennheiser on audio delivery has been a fantastic opportunity. They have pushed the boundaries as to how sound can evoke, provoke and inspire visitors and they have created a genuinely multi-media museum experience which has been a challenging objective but one we are delighted to have done with Sennheiser’s support and expertise.“

Popovich’s background in acoustical signal processing began at Digisonix LLC, where he was Director of Research, developing active sound and vibration control technologies applied to silencing HVAC, automotive, aerospace and industrial noise. Since then, he has served in a diverse set of technical and engineering roles in electronic circuit manufacturing, DSP algorithms and embedded software applied to sound, electric motors and vehicle system electronics. His past work has also included supporting audio-related algorithm and software development for videoconferencing products at VTEL.

Popovich most recently served as a faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Platteville (UWP), where he participated in the creation of a collaborative program between UWP and UW-Fox Valley in Menasha, Wisconsin. During this time, Popovich also provided DSP-related consulting services, including work for Sound Devices.
Popovich holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and has been named as inventor on 11 patents.

StreamGuys And AdsWizz Monetize Internet Radio for All Classical Portland

BAYSIDE, CALIFORNIA, March 19, 2013All Classical Portland, an independent, non-profit radio station with an FM presence in several Oregon markets, this year celebrates its 30th anniversary on the air. However, the pure-format Classical station – one of the few of its kind remaining – is not resting on its over-the-air laurels.

Streaming media and its monetization is top of mind for Director of New Media Alexander Bighill, who joined All Classical Portland in 2011. Bighill has since expanded to eight streams using StreamGuys’ cloud-based streaming architecture. AES E-Library Offers 14,000+ Fully Searchable PDF Files

Institutional And Individual Subscription Programs Now Available

NEW YORK: Audio Engineering Society Executive Director Bob Moses has announced new subscription formats to the AES E-Library. With over 14,000 fully searchable PDF files, the collection represents one of the world’s most comprehensive sources of definitive professional audio information. Documenting the progression of audio research and development from 1953 to the present day, the E-Library includes every paper published at each of the 133 AES Conventions and 49 international conferences, plus all papers published in the AES Journal. Engineering Briefs (eBriefs) recently introduced at conventions may also be accessed in the E-Library.

“The depth, range and authoritative nature of the professional audio subject matter amassed by the AES E-Library is unparalleled,” Moses says. “It provides a rich history of the evolution of audio technology, and carries all of the ideas, dialogue, and best practices forward from one generation to the next. This is really the crown jewel of the AES. It encompasses topics ranging from equipment design, to surround sound development, acoustic measurement, and hearing loss and protection.”
