As Aspen Music Festival Completes its 65th Successful Season, Neumann Is There to Capture the Warmth and Musical Glow

The Neumann M 150 Tube Microphone Puts Listeners Front and Center for Key Festival Performances, Broadcast on Public Radio

Aspen, CO, September 2, 2014: Since 1949, The Aspen Music Festival and School has been one of the most famous classical music festivals in the world and one of the most prolific, hosting more than 350 performances between June and August each year. The Festival, which features four in-residence orchestras where students play alongside faculty, is recorded each year and can be heard on American Public Media (APM), Colorado Public Radio and Aspen Public Radio. To faithfully capture every nuance of the performances, The Festival relies on several Neumann M 150 microphones at its principal venue: Benedict Music Tent.

NM1Festival performances are mostly orchestral in content and can range anywhere from small chamber ensembles (3, 4 or 5 musicians) up to over 100 musicians and a full choir on stage. Each year, the main microphone array at the Benedict Music Tent consists of a Decca tree with (5) Neumann M 150 Tube microphones placed in the center and arrayed across the stage.

“Our Neumann M 150s Tube microphones, which were a gift from the Sidney E. Frank Foundation, have been a staple of the Festival for a long time,” said Scott Burgess, Head Audio Engineer, Aspen Music Festival and School. “It is of paramount importance for us to capture every instance of what these incredibily talented students are doing onstage, and the M 150 lends a warm sound that makes the orchestra shine in all of our recordings and broadcast transmissions across the country.”

NM2Each performance in Benedict Music Tent, which has a capacity of roughly 2,000, is manned by the Festival’s audio staff, which consists of 14 advanced students and professionals. Burgess says that students on the audio staff come from many of the major recording institutions around the country. This year, the Festival exceeded its attendance projections, with many sold out performances among its three primary venues. The 2014 season concluded with a rousing performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, which was broadcast live to a vast listenership on public radio.

M 150 Tube w EA 170This year, the Neumann M 150s — which were chosen as the principle microphone several years ago in a ‘blind’ listening test versus microphones from the world’s leading manufacturers — were routed to Grace Design and Millennia Media preamplifiers situated in the catwalk of the venue before being converted by an RME AD/DA interface and subsequently routed to a Studer digital console in the control room. The team relied on several Sennheiser HD 600s for headphone monitoring, including at Front of House: “The HD 600s can be useful at Front of House since they sound great and are open air,” says Burgess. “They can be useful for hearing audio details while remaining aware of what is transpiring around you.”

While this is only Burgess’ second season, he says there is vast collective experience and wisdom to draw from, and that the Neumann M 150 plays an integral role in The Festival’s sound. “The Festival has been working these rooms for a long time and, and we are quite clear on what we want and how to get it. From this perspective, the Neumann M 150 delivers in every possible aspect.”

Bible Broadcasting Network Delivers its Message with GatesAir

Network expands with GatesAir high-efficiency FM/AM radio transmitters across the Americas, reducing labor and energy costs with each installation

Bible Broadcasting Network has exclusively selected GatesAir for all main transmitter sites, citing noticeable efficiency gains across labor and power consumption as key benefits.

“The green efficiency of the Flexiva transmitter has been advantageous and measurable,” said Ron Muffley, network engineering manager, Bible Broadcasting Network. “We have seen a sharp decrease in power use where we have replaced older transmitters. The most recent shipments include low-power FM transmitters for WYBQ-FM in Leesport, Pennsylvania; WYFY-FM in Cambridge, Ohio; and FM stations in Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador. The IP Link established a network connection to transport audio previously brought in by the satellite receiver, eliminating the RF performance issues that had hindered signal integrity at maximum operating power.

Prism Sound Releases SADiE Version 6.1

Prism Sound has announced the release of SADiE Version 6.1, an update to its highly acclaimed SADiE Version 6.0.0 recording and editing software.

With no dedicated proprietary hardware requirements the SADiE v 6.1 software packs are application based and focus on the core SADiE expertise of Mastering, Radio Production, TV/Film Post, Archiving and Restoration, and high level Sound Design.

Prism Sound has also announced a new and exceptionally competitive pricing structure for its SADiE software packs. New SADiE Features

WAV Master
With many more consumers now choosing to buy their music via a download, record labels are increasingly asking mastering engineers to deliver mastered audio as digital WAV files so they can be easily supplied to audio download sites such as iTunes, Spotify and Amazon.
SADiE’s newly introduced WAV Master feature allows users to create WAV files for an entire album, using PQ marks to define the start and end of the WAV file for each album track. Track Titles, Artist Name and other information is automatically incorporated into these files. As a further extension of its WAV Master feature, SADiE has also introduced a new high quality Sample Rate conversion algorithm. This brings the sample rate conversion process in-line with the high quality processing standards for which SADiE’s parent company, Prism Sound, is famous.

This ultra-efficient workflow allows SADiE’s PQ list to be used as a single source to create the WAVs, DDP and CDs that are required by today’s mastering engineers.

ISRC in BWF Files
Prism Sound has also incorporated ISRC in BWF into SADiE’s new WAV Master option. This feature is included as part of the Mastering Suite and Sound Suite packs.

Created and standardised by the European Broadcasting Union, Broadcast WAV (BWF) is an extended WAV format that allows ISRC data to be embedded in the file. ISRC stands for International Standard Recording Code. Every song released, and every version of that song, is allocated a unique ISRC by the record label. ISRC is then used to ensure that the correct files are used for playback and replication. It also ensures that artists and recording professionals who stand to benefit financially from any playback or replication are identified and compensated.

The UK Music Producer’s Guild has led the initiative to get BWF adopted as standard, and in conjunction with the EBU it has produced a Recommended Practice document that lays out methods by which an ISRC can be embedded into a BWF.

Other updates

These include an extension to SADiE’s Wav Master functionality with support for reading and writing a WAV file’s LIST-INFO chunk, and for Track Name and Artist metadata (included in Mastering Suite and Sound Suite packs). Prism Sound has also incorporated 32bit floating point format for recording or bouncing to WAV or BWF, thus allowing engineers to work at the highest possible resolution throughout. There is also the option of creating a profile when making a DDP Image or importing one.
In addition to these upgrades, Prism Sound is now including SADIE MTR (Multi-Track Recorder) software in the SADIE6 installer. This will run without license when using an LRX2 or Prism Sound Lyra, Titan, and Atlas, interfaces, and requires a license for native operation.
Looking to the future, SADiE will soon be offering enhanced video support for BlackMagic Design Decklink cards, as well as timecode support on SADiE Native systems (where the ASIO audio hardware supports timecode functionality). These extended new features will be included in an imminent service update. The software element of this update will be available to all 6.1 users, although some users may require additional hardware.
