New Brand Identity from Sound Devices Reinforces Video Product Line

AMSTERDAM, AUGUST 27, 2014 – Video Devices, mission-critical video products by Sound Devices, will make its IBC debut at this year’s exhibition (Hall 8, Stand B59). Since Sound Devices introduced its first video products, the camera-mounted PIX 240i and PIX 220i, the company has expanded on its success with a range of rack-mounted, network-connected video recorders. DPA Microphones Expands Sales Force

U.S. office welcomes three new Area Sales Managers; promotes new General Manager

Fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese, Leonardo Romero has more than 20 years experience in the U.S., Latin American and Middle Eastern markets. In addition to joining DPA, Inc. as Area Sales Manager for Southern U.S., he will also oversee DPA Microphones’ distributors in Canada and Latin America. He comes to the company from Teldyne Reson, manufacturer of high-tech sonar and hydrophone devices, where he served as Latin America Sales Director. With a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, Irvine, Romero has held sales positions for a variety of companies across the oil, printing and software markets, including Lub-Line Corporation; OneVision Software, AG; Esko-Graphics; Budde International, Inc. and Newgen Systems. He will build on these experiences to help with DPA’s presence in the HOW, theme park and cruise ship markets.

With a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Barry University and a recording arts associate’s degree from Full Sail University, Christopher Spahr’s 20-year career spans the music, recording arts and pro sound industries. He comes to DPA Microphones as Area Sales Manager for Eastern U.S. from RTW, where he oversaw U.S. sales and operations. Prior to that, he spent seven years as a Market Development Manager and certified U.S. RF Expert for Sennheiser, in both the installed sound and professional channels. He has also served as Staff Engineer at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida and performed live sound work for various concerts, corporate functions and theater applications. These experiences make Philadelphia-based Spahr an excellent candidate to grow DPA’s reach on the East Coast and in the broadcast, theater and music markets.

A former Film Sound Instructor with The Los Angeles Film School, Pedro Rocha joins DPA Microphones as Area Sales Manager for Western U.S. In addition to his bachelor’s degree in electronics and telecommunications engineering from the Santo Domingo Institute of Technology, Rocha also earned a certificate degree in audio engineering from the Musician’s Institute and attended Full Sail University’s online entertainment business master’s program. Prior to his teaching position, Rocha served as an Avid Pro Tools® Marketing Specialist and as a pro audio and musical instrument Sales Representative for a variety of retailers, which will serve him well for his current position. In addition to his responsibilities of West Coast sales, Rocha will also be tasked with overseeing growth in the film and music industries.

Building on his five-year tenure with the company, Shan Siebert has been promoted to General Manager from his role as Service Manager, which he has held since 2010. In this new position, Siebert will oversee the day-to-day operations of the U.S. office, including distribution, technical assistance and loan facilitation. Prior to joining DPA Microphones, Shan served as a Radio Installer in the United States Army for four years, learning to solder and repair electrical equipment, and later earned a pastry degree that led to his own dessert company, where he learned the intricacies of business management. This unique background gives Siebert the perfect combination of trade and financial experience to manage and oversee DPA’s U.S. office.

Sound Devices Opens New European Service Center

New Berlin Location Provides Shorter Repair Turnaround Time for European Customers

REEDSBURG, WI, AUGUST 20, 2014 – Sound Devices is pleased to announce the establishment of Sound Devices Europe GmbH and the opening of its new European Service Center in Berlin-Adlershof, Germany’s leading science and technology park. The new facility has been established to extend product service and repair to the company’s growing international customer base.

With the opening of the new repair facility in Berlin, European customers can expect shorter turnaround times and lower shipping costs. In addition, local users will also have closer contact with Sound Devices technicians. The facility is stocked with a full inventory of parts and features brand-new, state-of-the-art repair equipment, and Sound Devices factory-customized test stands to ensure the highest quality service and repair possible.

Syndicated web-based radio show simplifies studio setup with company’s d:dicate Recording Microphone range

NEW YORK, JULY 29, 2014 – Listeners the world-over tune in to BBS Internet Radio every Thursday to hear The Lena Live Radio Hour, hosted by Professor Lena Miremonde. Thanks to his musical background, Lampert has been familiar with DPA for years. When he went searching for a microphone solution for Lena Live, he felt DPA’s selection of recording mics could easily be integrated into the station. Using just one d:dicate preamp, Lampert can choose between the 2006 Omni capsule, to record commercial and performance music, and the 2011 Cardioid capsule, to record interviews with distinguished guests who join the program to share the latest in science, medicine, the arts, politics, psychology and economics.

“The modular capability of the d:dicate Recording Microphones is exactly the reason we chose DPA,” shares Lampert. “What worked extremely well was that the range increased our efficiency dramatically and we’ve had really fantastic results all around.”

Video Devices PIX 260i Streamlines Multi-Campus Workflow For Bethlehem Baptist Church

MINNEAPOLIS, JULY 8, 2014 – When Bethlehem Baptist Church was looking for a reliable video/audio solution for recording and playback of weekly services among the house of worship’s multiple campuses, it turned to the PIX 260i Production Video Recorder from Video Devices, a new brand of Sound Devices that is dedicated to the company’s mission critical video products. The church utilizes five PIX 260i’s to ensure the highest quality video and audio when rebroadcasting sermons to the campuses.

Comprised of three campuses (Downtown, North and South), Bethlehem Baptist Church hosts multiple services a week. In order to ensure that all three campuses have a current sermon from the main pastor, Associate Director for Media Ministries Jonathan Davis records the Saturday night service using the PIX 260i. He then sends the recording for playback to the two campuses not being served by the preaching pastor, on a particular Sunday morning. Recorded files can be transferred over Ethernet or delivered on one of the four drives that the 260i is able to simultaneously record to. The Downtown and North campuses feature a full production setup, while the South Campus is a portable campus at a local high school for the Sunday morning services. The Downtown and North campuses each have two PIX 260is, and the South campus has another.

The PIX 260i’s extensive audio capabilities are an essential component for the facility. The facility records both the mono- and stereo-feed of the house, as well as an iso of the pastor’s mic. Using the PIX 260i, the facility is able to send and receive all audio over Dante to and from its Yamaha CL5 mixing system. In order to cater to its ethnically diverse members, Bethlehem Baptist Church also records live Spanish and Russian translations. The multiple track count gives the facility room to grow in terms of having additional isolated audio tracks available, when needed. In addition, with only two full-time media staff members, the facility needed a user-friendly solution to cater to its large volunteer base. The PIX 260i’s large display and easy-to-use controls enable non-professionals to use the equipment with ease on an ongoing basis.

“We found that the PIX 260i met all of our criteria, and most importantly, it was seamlessly incorporated into our existing AV system,” says Davis. “The PIX 260i gives us ultimate flexibility in being able to record content from SDI or HDMI, and to get that content back out just as easily. In addition, the PIX 260i allows us to take whatever we record and deliver it directly into our post-production workflow in order to post services online as well as streamline our other productions.”

Davis and the church are already familiar with the company’s products, as they have used its PIX 240i recorder for on-location productions. “We found the PIX 240i to be very proficient and an improvement to our workflow, so when we heard about the PIX 260i, we knew we had to give it a look. It sounded perfect for what we needed,” says Davis. “We needed something that was rock-solid reliable, because when it comes to church services, it is a timed event. There isn’t a backup and you don’t get a do-over. The Video Devices PIX 260i gives us the reliability and redundancy we need to ensure that we capture the services and are able to play them back at both our fixed and mobile locations.”

The PIX 260i brings the features and tools needed by production companies and other production-based AV environments looking to migrate to file-based recording and playback environments. It records either QuickTime files in either Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD video formats or WAV format audio files. Files recorded with Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD are ready for editing in common editing environments, such as Avid, Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere, eliminating time-consuming transferring and transcoding. For color-critical applications, the PIX 260i supports Apple ProRes 4444 through its 12-bit, 4:4:4 3G-SDI I/O. Users can also play out files from the PIX 260i for real-time applications.

Continuing the company’s heritage in production sound, the PIX 260i is infused with 32-track audio recording and playback capabilities. In addition to 16 channels of embedded SDI audio and eight channels of HDMI audio, the PIX 260i also accepts eight channels of line-level analog I/O and eight channels of AES digital audio. Using Dante, the PIX 260i can accept and transmit up to 32 channels of audio over Ethernet.

Sound Devices 970 Brings Rackmounted Audio to InfoComm 2014

64-Track Dante and MADI-Equipped Multi-Track Audio Recorder Makes AV Debut

LAS VEGAS, JUNE 18, 2014 – Sound Devices, specialists in audio and video production equipment, showcases the 970, its first-ever dedicated audio-only rack-mounted solution, which boasts an impressive 64 channels of Dante and MADI, at InfoComm 2014 (Booth C6443). The half-rack, 2U device simplifies any application requiring high-quality, high-track-count audio recording, including live events such as concerts and sports recording, corporate events, houses of worship (HOW), studio and mobile production, as well as theater and museum presentations.

Sound Devices 970 records 64 channels of monophonic or polyphonic 24-bit WAV files from any of its 144 available inputs. Inputs available include 64 channels of Ethernet-based Dante, 64 channels of optical or coaxial MADI, eight channels of line-level analog and eight channels of AES digital. The 970 is a powerful tool for professionals who require a significant number of audio channels. Any input can be assigned to any track. In addition, 32-track recording at 96 kHz is supported.

The 970 records to any of four attached drives, which include two front-panel drive bays and two rear-panel e-SATA connected drives. Material can be recorded to multiple drives simultaneously or sequentially. This eliminates time-consuming post-record copying and allows for continuous long-form, high-track count recordings.

The Sound Devices 970 features an embedded Web-based control panel for machine transport and setup control over Ethernet-based networks as well as file transfer over the data network with SMB. In mission-critical audio-over-IP AV installations, where hundreds of audio channels are distributed between zones, setting up a redundant network to protect against loss of audio due to network failure provides peace of mind. The ability to have one drive transferring files over Ethernet, while another continues recording, offers significant production time savings. Corporate, HOW, theater and museum presentation videos that are created, edited and rendered remotely can be transferred directly to the venue.

File metadata editing of scene name, take name, notes, track names and reel folders can be done during, before and after recording across all drives. In addition to RS-422 and GPIO control, the unit also allows for format conversion between analog, AES digital, MADI and Dante, acting as a bridge and routing matrix between these types of audio I/O.

Sound Devices 970 is designed with a large five-inch screen for metering of up to 64 tracks and for fast and intuitive menu control. It also features the Sound Devices proprietary PowerSafe technology. PowerSafe circuitry has a built-in 10-second power reserve. In the event of power loss, the unit continues to operate for up to 10 seconds, then stops any file operation and shuts down. This ensures that a complete power loss has no effect on the recording. In addition, the 970 features FileSafe, which automatically detects and repairs corrupted file headers when drives are mounted. This occurs when a drive is inadvertently removed during recording, with the 970, simply reinsert the drive and it automatically repairs its files.

With its built-in, rock-steady Ambient Recording Lockit time-code technology, the 970 is well-suited to operate as a master clock. It can also slave or be jammed to any other time-code source. All common production time-code rates and modes are supported. The 970 also supports external synchronization from word clock, MADI or AES. To simplify the connection of multiple digital inputs, SRCs are available for all MADI, Dante or AES inputs.

Video Devices PIX 270i and PIX 250i Come Into Focus at InfoComm 2014

New Recorders Offer Advanced Network Functionality and Multi-Drive Recording for Seamless Integration into Existing AV Systems

LAS VEGAS, JUNE 17, 2014 – Video Devices, mission critical video products by Sound Devices, showcases its latest PIX recorders, PIX 270i and PIX 250i, at InfoComm 2014 (Booth C6443). The network-connected PIX 270i and PIX 250i multi-drive video decks offer comprehensive multi-channel AV record and playback tools for house of worship (HOW), corporate, live event and other production applications.

The PIX 270i and PIX 250i recorders offer significant advantages and time-savings to production workflows, providing tapeless, file-based recording and playback with the ability to access and transfer high-quality files over Ethernet. Its advanced network functionality along with simultaneous multi-drive video and audio recording makes Video Devices latest PIX products a complete production-ready AV solution. In addition, its ability to be controlled over IP, RS-422 and GPIO make it ideally suited to be integrated into a range of AV applications.

Both products feature extensive network connectivity and can be connected over Ethernet for simultaneous grouped recording and playback, creating a cost-effective scalable solution that addresses the multi-camera recording needs of today’s production. Its built-in Web server, PIXNet, offers browser-based transport and setup-menu control of any number of units. PIX 270i features built-in multiple unit synchronization, offering simultaneous, frame-accurate recording and playback, ideal for multi-camera production and live event multi-screen playback. Any number of units can be grouped and controlled as a single system from either the hardware or the built-in Web-based control panel. Frame accurate sync works with other PIX 260i and PIX 270i recorders. The PIX 250i can be grouped with other PIX 250i, PIX 260i and PIX 270i recorders. The PIX 270i and PIX 250i can be controlled by external RS-422 (Sony 9-pin compatible) controllers as well as via its GPIO port.

Up to four drives, two SATA drives in PIX-CADDYs and two SATA-connected drives can be connected to the PIX 270i. All four drives can be recorded to simultaneously or sequentially for redundancy and long-form programs. For PIX 250i, up to two SATA drives in PIX-CADDYs can be connected to the easily accessed front-panel drive bays. In the same fashion, both drives can be recorded to simultaneously or sequentially. This redundancy in local, removable storage devices, coupled with standard, Ethernet-based file-transfer features, further reduces steps in the production workflow. Recording to multiple drives offers immediate file backup, eliminating time-consuming post-record copying. Gigabit Ethernet network ports enable remote access to recorded files and the ability to transfer these files quickly into a post-production environment.

The Video Devices PIX 250i and PIX 270i are designed for mission-critical applications with their dedicated video hardware, and PowerSafe and FileSafe feature sets. Both products are equipped with the company’s proprietary PowerSafe technology. PowerSafe circuitry has a built-in 10-second power reserve. The PIX recorders offer 3G-SDI (12-bit, 4:4:4) and HDMI I/O, and can record at numerous data rates. Full RGB Apple ProRes 4444 (330 Mbps) and low data rate proxy files (36 Mbps) are available. Files are ready for import directly into popular editing environments, including Avid, Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro, eliminating time-consuming transferring and transcoding.

The PIX 270i offers extensive audio capabilities, with 64 record tracks (32 tracks at 96k), Dante audio-over-Ethernet, 64 channels of both MADI (coaxial and optical) audio, eight channels of analog audio, eight channels of AES digital audio, and 16 channels of embedded SDI audio, making the PIX 270i the world’s first video device that also includes Dante audio over Ethernet. The PIX 250i features eight channels of analog audio, eight channels of AES digital audio and 16 channels of embedded SDI audio, and supports up to 16 tracks of audio. With its wide range of input and output capabilities, the 270i also offers real-time bridging between the various audio interface types.

PIX 270i and PIX 250i also include a high-performance hardware scaler and frame-rate converter. Regardless of the incoming signal, PIX records the signal after up-, down- or cross-conversion at the same or different frame rate. Hardware-based 3:2 pull-down removal is also available.

With its built-in ultra-accurate time-code generator/reader with genlock input/output, the PIX is a great master clock for driving a network of devices requiring synchronization. In addition to generating ultra-stable time-code, time-code can be read from the SDI stream, the HDMI stream or external sources.

PIX can be seamlessly integrated into existing AV systems and environments due to its 1/2-rack, 2-U chassis dimension. Both the PIX 270i and PIX 250i have precision five-inch IPS, 800- x 480-pixel displays for setup menu access and video monitoring. The high-accuracy display, with its peaking, false color and zoom functions, is perfect for framing, exposure and focus evaluation.
