The next evolutionary step for NUGEN Audio’s highly regarded ‘VisLM’ software, MultiMonitor provides the most powerful multi-channel Loudness and True Peak metering available today. It offers 16 individual meters, each capable of mono, stereo or 5.1 formats (providing metering of up to 96 audio channels simultaneously), with each meter showing a LUFS momentary display alongside a True Peak display. Each meter also has a dedicated numeric Short Term and Integrated LUFS data display, with the option to color-code meters to aid grouping. Sound Devices Introduces Improved Features for 664 Production Mixer at AES 2013

Latest Firmware Update Offers Enhanced Functionality

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 17, 2013 — Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, presents expanded recording capabilities, along with greater flexibility and ease-of-use outdoors for the company’s flagship 664 Production Mixer. Sound Devices showcases the benefits of the 664’s latest firmware update, Version 1.05, at the 135th International AES Convention (Gotham Sound and Communications, Booth 2738).

Sound Devices 664 features six ultra-low-noise, high-dynamic-range preamps that accept mic- or line-level signals and include analog peak limiters, high-pass filters, input trim control and direct outputs per channel. Featuring full analog audio paths for high-performance audio and superb power efficiency, the 664 also has numerous digital capabilities. Inputs 1 and 6 can be selected as AES3 or AES42 inputs for digital microphones, each with its own SRC for simplicity in system clocking. The 664’s analog output compliment includes four output buses. The L and R buses are on balanced XLR, 10-Pin and TA-3M connectors and on unbalanced TA-3M or 3.5mm connectors. Secondary output buses X1 and X2 are available on balanced TA-3M connectors. Users can route inputs and buses to four AES3 connections for eight digital outputs on the XLR and 10-pin connectors.

Firmware version 1.05 brings additional features to the already-powerful mixer, including greater flexibility and ease-of-use outdoors. The “LCD Daylight Display” mode incorporates a daylight-specific color scheme and solid bar metering option for improved readability in direct sunlight. Sound Devices has also incorporated additional front panel button shortcuts, including “LCD Daylight Display” mode (HP + SELECT encoders) and Phrase list (HP + RTN B/C) for fast entry of metadata notes. Version 1.05 also incorporates the shortcut for activating different setup tone modes. Users also have new “Track Names in Meters” options (without color gradient/ramp) that are selectable for either right- or left-side display.

With version 1.05, 664 now offers users Monophonic Broadcast WAV file support, with the ability to record up to 10 tracks to two cards, with up to three seconds of record pre-roll. If a card not optimized for multi-channel monophonic file recording is used, or if the monophonic 10-track limit is exceeded, a warning message is displayed on the LCD when starting a recording. Polyphonic mode or reducing track count is recommended. In addition, when formatted in the 664, SD cards 64 GB and larger are now automatically formatted as ExFAT (in accordance with the SD Association’s recommendation). All CF cards and lower-capacity SD cards remain FAT32. Version 1.05 also enables a Headphone Volume or Headphone Preset default option, which sets the HP encoder to operate as headphone level or to select HP presets when rotated. Pressing the headphone encoder momentarily activates the alternative function.

RTW Delivers 145 TM3 TouchMonitor Units to WDR

Feature-Rich Pro-Grade Loudness Meters Prove to Be Practical Administration Solution

COLOGNE, GERMANY, 17 OCTOBER 2013—RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, has delivered 145 TM3 TouchMonitor units to German broadcaster WDR, Europe’s second-largest broadcaster after the BBC. The units, which WDR has installed in its regional studios and editing suites, enable the broadcaster to comply with EBU R128 loudness metering.

With the development of EBU R128, the audio metering reference has shifted from PPM to loudness, with a peak level (QPPM) of –9 dBFS to a loudness target of –23 LUFS (Loudness Unit Full Scale). Since August 2012, when all German broadcasters agreed to implement EBU R128-compliant loudness metering, WDR has employed a large number of TM7 and TM9 units. Installing the TM3 for EBU R128-compliant loudness metering in smaller editing suites was a natural next step.

WDR opted for the TM3, the smallest member of the TouchMonitor family, because it offers not only PPM and true-peak meters, but also supports all current loudness metering functions compliant with the major international standards (including EBU R128, ITU-R BS.1770-3/1771, ATSC A/85 and ARIB) for up to six channels. The broadcaster also liked that the TM3 could display measurements by single channels, summing bar graphs, loudness range or numerically, with the capability of separating displays as needed for easy viewing by multiple users. The TM3’s flexibility and easy-to-use setup software, which offers customizable administrative support, was also a factor in its purchase.
“The display provides excellent readability and the software offers great views for a large number of applications,” says Friedrich Neher, head of the master unit service group at WDR. “In addition, the similarity to the TM7 and TM9 units already in use at WDR was an attractive point. Also, we liked the idea of using the TM3 as a standalone device. The separation of the display unit and the breakout box were critical, as this considerably increases the flexibility compared to competing products.”
Martin Leuenberg, head of sales at RTW, also noted that while plug-in solutions might seem like a realistic alternative, they have two major drawbacks. “First, any user can change presets or the setup. Second, this would have added another GUI to an already cluttered screen area,” he says. “While you might think that an integrated plug-in would ensure clarity, it comes at the cost of precious display area.”
As freelancers and full-time employees share the same work areas at WDR, the company requires a powerful administration solution to ensure seamless workflows. The Devicer DC1 setup software component for the TM3 allows for preset customization, allowing users to configure administration rights for the application, making sure that only authorized employees can change the setup.
RTW’s TM3 TouchMonitor comprises a horizontally or vertically mounted display unit for easy readability along with a separate interface box. The meter handles analog (balanced or unbalanced) as well as digital stereo signals (AES, S/PDIF). The TM3-6CH version accepts up to six AES3 input signals. The easy-to-use interface ensures fast and intuitive touch operation. The supplied factory presets provide a good set of samples for the supported applications, connection options and standards, and also allow for out-of-the-box operation. Plus, the existing presets can be customized easily using the Devicer DC1 software for Windows and Mac OS.

Sound Designer Glenn Ricci Trusts Audio Meter to Check Loudness Levels For Popular Haunted House’s Sound Effects

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, OCTOBER 15, 2013 – As Glenn Ricci, the sound effects designer for ScareHouse, named by the Travel Channel as one of the top five haunts in the country, will tell you, sound is just as important as the visual element when it comes creating a convincingly eerie, skin-crawling atmosphere. Helping him raise the hackles of ScareHouse attendees is the TM3 TouchMonitor from RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters and monitoring devices for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control.

Located in a supposedly haunted former Elk’s Club lodge in Pittsburgh, ScareHouse treats visitors to Hollywood-quality sets, characters and special effects that lend a high degree of realism (and terror). Its primary attractions include an entire haunted town, a demented anti-Santa, an alternate, zombified replica of Pittsburgh and a very nefarious basement. Human actors portray ghosts, zombies, ghouls and other evil night dwellers, sometimes grabbing at visitors for an especially authentic fright. The scares just wouldn’t be the same, however, without foreboding music, evil-sounding cackles and similar soundscapes setting the mood. Because of the importance these sound effects play, Ricci must ensure that the soundscapes he creates are smooth and the audio is on the level.

“I draw from a lot of different elements when I’m creating something for the show, so it’s important to even out the loudness levels for each source to make it sound cohesive,” says Ricci. “I might record or mix something using my own compositions, stuff from different sound libraries or even canned music, so I want to deliver a very smooth end product without uneven loudness in the final mix. I don’t want to worry about someone hitting play and not hearing the sound because it’s not as loud as the last thing they played. RTW’s TM3 really gives me the peace of mind of knowing everything is crisp, clear and even.”

Controlled using a touch-sensitive display, the TM3 features a 4.3-inch touchscreen and a stylish exterior allowing for horizontal and vertical placement. It includes a large number of graphical and numerical instruments showing single-channel along with summing-loudness bargraphs, PPM, true peak, SPL, loudness range (LRA), dialnorm and correlation. It handles analog or digital stereo signals and features a user interface allowing the selection of up to 10 presets quickly and simply with the swipe of a finger.

“I was pretty amazed with the pre-set capabilities,” says Ricci. “I like that I can program the device to customize pre-sets for me. It makes it more intuitive—you can just go and don’t have to think about it. You just spend a little bit of time setting it up based on the instruments that you plan to work with, and don’t have to think about it after that. It’s good to get different perspectives to just go between a couple of pre-sets.”

The TM3 also offers Ricci a way to ensure consistent loudness across the various software programs he uses. “What I like about having it here is that I never have to worry about what software program I’m using. I use a lot of software programs, such as Logic Pro and Abelton Live for some composition, and they all have different meters in them, so having one consistent meter that lives outside of it all is really helpful. It means I don’t have to check of the meters from a separate plug-in, which saves me time.”

The CCT-RT-EX expands the distance of a BaseStation signal to a remote antenna by as much as 914 meters (3,000 feet) with one Line Extender or 609 meters (2,000 feet) per Line Extender if using more than one Line Extender. A total of three Line Extenders can be connected to provide total coverage of up to 2286 meters (7,500 feet). These solutions further enhance the system’s application for users requiring ultra-portable wireless communications in RF-rich environments.

SSL Live Console is Now Shipping

SSL’s first live console ships on schedule to first wave of customers and commercial partners

OXFORD, ENGLAND — The premiere of the SSL Live console at Prolight + Sound in April 2013 surprised and enthralled the industry. Solid State Logic has been a dominant player in the design and manufacture of consoles for Music, Broadcast and Post for more than 35 years, but it had never produced a product designed specifically for live audio production. SSL’s reputation and business was built upon visionary operational design and benchmark quality standards in audio reproduction and manufacturing so expectations were instantly high.

Early response from FOH and Monitor Engineers has been extremely positive. The more operators see it, the more the excitement surrounding the console grows. Praise surrounds the operational flexibility of the console, its sonic performance and the sensation of ‘finger painting with audio’ via the gestural touch screen. The on-board effects and superb channel processing toolkit and the unique SSL Blacklight system, which simplifies running audio and control between console and stageboxes delivers a surprising amount of power at a compelling price.

Moving Coil Instrument and Test Time Control Options Enhance Loudness Measurement Capabilities

AMSTERDAM, 15 SEPTEMBER, 2013 – RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters and monitoring devices for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, will display its latest innovative software options for its TM3 and TM3-3G TouchMonitors IBC 2013 (Stand 8.D92). The new TM3-SWMC software license, now shipping, incorporates a Moving Coil Emulation display, while the recent TM3 firmware update 2.50 includes the new Time Test Control option. RTW will demo a TM3 and TM3-3G equipped with both of these options at the show.

Moving Coil Emulation
The new TM3-SWMC software license expands the functionality of the TM3 TouchMonitor series with PPM, VU, loudness and a new combination of PPM and loudness moving coil instruments. The display features vertical or horizontal orientation and numeric and peak indicators with single, double and stereo channel instruments. For stereo groups in the PPM moving coil mode, additional M/S moving coil emulation is selectable.

Based on a concept developed by the BBC, the TM3-SWMC software license option implements a combined PPM and loudness sum display. On this instrument, a third cyan-colored needle depicts one of the three summed loudness values—M, S, or I—on a separate scale. It is helpful for the intuitive display of loudness to be on target with a fixed relative-loudness scale (-9 to +9 LU). The Moving Coil license option requires users to install the current firmware version 2.50 and the current Devicer DC1 version 2.50. Time Test Control
Offered as part of firmware 2.50, users can employ this sub menu to set the parameters for starting and stopping loudness measurement functions. In addition to a manual control enabled by on-screen keys and/or the GPI interface, full or semi-automatic measurements can also be defined. Therefore, the user can choose between an autostart after loading a preset or autostart when reaching the value of an adjusted gate, with or without an automatic reset of previous values. Users can terminate loudness measurements manually with on-screen keys and/or GPI commands, as well as automatically by defining a threshold value and time span. The combination of those parameters allows users to set an automatic, semi-automatic or manual loudness measurement process as required for different applications. The Test Time Control option will also be available for the TouchMonitor TM7, TMR7 and TM9 with the next firmware update.

TM3 and TM3-3G TouchMonitor
Controlled using a touch-sensitive display, the TM3 and TM3-3G both have a budget-friendly base price, a 4.3-inch touchscreen and a stylish exterior allowing for horizontal and vertical placement. They include a large number of graphical and numerical instruments showing single-channel or, in the case of the TM3-3G, any of the eight audio channels contained in a 3G-SDI stream used for metering, de-embedding and monitoring 3G-SDI audio. Both also include summing-loudness bargraphs, PPM, true peak, SPL, loudness range (LRA), dialnorm and correlation. The TM3 and TM3-3G are highly appealing compact solutions ideal for editorial offices, edit suites and small control rooms.

Both the TM3 and TM3-3G also feature PPM and true-peak instruments and offer comprehensive loudness metering in compliance with all globally relevant standards, including EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-3/1771-1, ATSC A/85 and ARIB. Finally, they also feature the Magic LRA instrument, specifically designed by RTW for intuitive visualization of the loudness range and integrated-loudness parameters.

Clear-Com Showcases Icon Connectivity Solutions at IBC 2013

ICON is a collection of communications products that link local or geographically distributed intercom systems over Ethernet/IP networks and/or optical fiber. VoICE2 — four-channel Ethernet/IP Interface for extending intercom audio communications or four-wire audio to remote sites over IP networks (LAN, WAN, Internet). It features low latency over LAN and WAN, ease of setup and automatic network adaptive CODECs with varying audio qualities.

Concert-Server — Ideal solution for operating over IT networks, each Concert™ system offers 144 channels of virtual intercom and/or four-wire audio over Ethernet/IP. Concert provides highly secure connections and low latency over LAN and WAN networks. Each Concert-server is equipped with eight four-wire I/O audio ports and is pre-loaded with Concert-server software. It includes a breakout harness to 16 XLRs (eight I/O) or RJ-45s.

Optocore X6R-FX-INTERCOM and V3R-FX-INTERCOM — Designed for Optical fiber rings, the eight port (four port on the V3R) Optocore/Clear-Com intercom interfaces offer transport of intercom audio and control data. Each device includes two redundant LAN network ports and two SANE CAT5 ports and Optocore LC fiber interface. It offers a simple RJ-45 connection for matrices, user panels and any four-wire audio I/O.

FIM-202D — Ideal for systems with local and secure connections, this two-channel fiber interface extends Clear-Com matrix intercom to two Clear-Com key-panels or two four-wire audio to remote sites (dual fiber required). The FIM-202D features a throw-down design for ease of deployment, high audio bandwidth and very low latency.

Eclipse-HX Matrices — High performance matrix system frames offer up to 64 nodes of connectivity over fiber interface cards. The matrices can also intelligently trunk by means of four-wire, E1, T1, MADI and Ethernet/IP with low latency over LAN and WAN networks. Matrices provide local interfaces for MADI, IP, four-wire, PLs, GPIO, POTS, E1 and T1.

RTW Debuts SurroundControl Series Firmware Update at IBC 2013

Latest Version Simplifies Monitoring While Working in Various Audio Formats

AMSTERDAM, 14 SEPTEMBER, 2013 – RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters and monitoring devices for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, is pleased to debut at IBC 2013 (Stand 8.D92) a firmware update for its flagship SurroundControl 31900 and 31960 series. In addition to supporting all current EBU/ITU loudness regulations, including ITU 1770-3, the new firmware simplifies the control of the studio monitoring environment when switching over between various audio formats like stereo, 3.1, 5.1 or 7.1, a common occurrence in today’s broadcast environment.

By enabling the user to select independent Trim and Delay values for both analog and digital monitoring outputs, this information can then be stored in up to five Level/Delay Trim Sets in the Audio System menu. When defining the individual input routing for the sub presets, these new Level/Delay Trim Sets can be allocated and tapped into as needed.

“It’s not uncommon for an audio engineer, especially in the broadcast sector, to be working with multiple audio formats at one time,” says Andreas Tweitmann, CEO, RTW. “By adding this new feature to our popular SurroundControl series, we are enabling users to easily organize their workflow, while simultaneously keeping up with the demands of working in various formats.”

RTW’s SurroundControl 31900 and 31960 series combines control, analysis and monitoring of eight-channel 5.1 to 7.1 surround sound into one single system. The proprietary Surround Sound Analyzer (House display) is a powerful tool for visualizing the interaction of all important parameters of surround signals. The dynamic behavior of all display elements corresponds to the subjective listening impression, enabling you to see the balance of a surround program intuitively and at a glance. RTW Introduces Loudness Quality Logger Software for TM7, TMR7 and TM9 TouchMonitor Lines at IBC 2013

AMSTERDAM, 13 SEPTEMBER, 2013 – RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters and monitoring devices for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, is pleased to debut at IBC 2013 (Stand 8.D92) its LQL (Loudness Quality Logger) a new tool for logging, true-peak data analysis and reporting that is compatible with the TM7, TMR7 and TM9 TouchMonitor line of products. The LQL license (SW20014) is a natural extension of RTW’s range of innovative software options for the 7- and 9-inch line of TouchMonitor audio meters. RTW executives will be on-hand to demo and discuss this new software at the company’s IBC stand.

LQL enables data to be derived directly via an IP-connection from a capable TouchMonitor audio meter, as well as from external storage media such as a USB stick. Also included in the software are dual limit weighting, status information, marker and various other reporting features. The new PC software is free of charge to users, however the SW20014 LQL license is required to enable a TM7, TMR7 or TM9 series meter to be compatible with data export and additional display functions.

“The new Loudness Quality Logger is quite a milestone for RTW,” says Andreas Tweitmann, CEO, RTW. “When we first developed the concept for the TouchMonitor, we knew it would be necessary to continue researching and developing tools that would keep up with and be one step ahead of technology for managing loudness. With the ability for the user to obtain a log, analysis and reporting, their experience is enhanced even further, providing them with an essential solution unlike ever before.”

The TM7 and TM9 series TouchMonitors, which include the innovative Magic LRA instrument, feature a 7- and 9-inch touch-sensitive display, respectively, and provide unparalleled flexibility and modularity, combined with intuitive control. The software visualizes multiple sources simultaneously. Both support displaying the same signal on multiple instruments in parallel, each with dedicated defaults with both horizontal and vertical operation. TM7 visualizes up to 40 sources at the same time, while the TM9 visualizes up to 48 and the TMR7, specifically designed for radio broadcasting, visualizes up to four.

Various audio interfaces and combinations are available i.e. analog, AES3, AES3id or 3G-SDI. RTW’s entire TouchMonitor range was created to help adhere to all major industry loudness standards, including EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-3/1771-1, ATSC A/85 and ARIB.
