Clear-Com Announces New HelixNet Network Linking at the 2013 NAB Show

New Networking Capability Extends the Digital Partyline System for Supporting Broadcast Production Communication Workflow

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 9, 2013 ? Clear-Com®, a global leader in critical voice communications systems, will unveil version 1.1 of the HelixNet™ Partyline Intercom System at the 2013 NAB Show (Booth C8008). Included in this new product release is a system linking capability, which extends digital partyline intercom communications over a network among a production’s field users, mobile trucks and studio headquarters cost-effectively and efficiently, without compromising the audio quality.

The HelixNet Partyline Intercom System is the industry’s first digital network partyline intercom to combine the simplicity of a traditional analog partyline intercom with the advanced network management capabilities of a matrix intercom. As it uses a single-pair, shielded cable for supporting all audio channels, program audio, and power for beltpacks, it is ideal for broadcast applications that require quick setup and distribution of multiple channels of intercom.

Expanded functionality under version 1.1 includes the ability to link up to five HMS-4X Main Stations and up to 100 HBP-2X Digital Beltpacks via Ethernet to build larger and more sophisticated partyline intercom systems. HelixNet’s station-to-station networking function makes this possible by defining up to five Main Stations that can be connected via the new HLI-ET2 Ethernet Module. Main Stations can connect directly or through a LAN using standard IT switches. A new HLI-FBS Fiber Module is also available for linking stations over long distances. The Fiber Module has two fiber ports using SFP modules for simple exchange of fiber transceivers. It also allows linking to four other Main Stations in a fiber daisy-chain. The standard connection is Single-Mode with Multi-Mode offered as an option.

With the ability to link up to five four-channel stations, the system can dynamically discover and share up to 20 digital partylines plus five program inputs in a network distributed system. This means that any of the possible 100 two-channel HelixNet Beltpack users can select from up to a possible 20 partyline channels using a single-pair shielded cable.”

Since the HelixNet platform is based on Clear-Com’s I.V.Core™, a core set of Intercom-over-IP technologies for providing networking flexibility, this entire system can operate over any LAN infrastructure found in studio or remote production environments, making it easier to create a decentralized, distributed intercom architecture. Stage managers, along with teleprompter, lighting and camera operators, audio engineers and any HelixNet user can remain connected and easily interface with remote mobile production trucks and/or studios over HelixNet.

RTW Introduces 3G-SDI Interface for TM7 TouchMonitor at NAB 2013

New TM7 Hardware Interface Supports SD, HD and 3G-SDI Formats

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 9, 2013 — RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters and monitoring devices for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, is debuting its new TM7-HW20714 TouchMonitor, featuring a 3G-SDI interface, at the 2013 NAB Show (Booth C1844).

RTW developed the new TM7 interface in response to requests by audio engineers in the broadcast market for a seven-inch audio metering tool that is compatible with 3G interfacing. The seven-inch size is a perfect fit inside OB trucks and other smaller-scale installations where space is a major issue.

The TM7-HW20714 accepts all SD, HD and 3G formats that are currently available in the marketplace, allowing for seamless integration into TV studios, switching rooms and video post-production environments. It complements the existing custom input configuration of TouchMonitor units, which makes analog, AES3 and AES3-id formats available in various combinations, depending on the hardware version the customer chooses. The through-port of the 3G-SDI interface forwards the SDI input signal. De-embedded SDI signals may be routed to any existing AES output. This new model includes four AES3 (eight-channel) inputs and four AES3 (eight-channel) outputs that can be used as direct AES outputs either to buffer or reroute the AES signals or to send out a decoded 3G audio signal. In addition, now with the 3G-SDI interface, the TouchMonitor TM7 can display up to 32 channels of audio from any combination of inputs.

The TM7 has a 16:9 TFT display and can be delivered as a tabletop or as a half-19” 3U rack-mount unit. It has two USB 2.0 interfaces, a GPIO-interface, RJ-45 ethernet connection, VGA output, a connector for 24 V DC supply, as well as a wall plug power supply option. It includes basic functions such as the pre-installed Stereo PPM software for Peak-, TruePeak- and Correlation measurement, further software licenses providing other instruments can purchased just as the user needs.

New Four-Channel Metering Solution Offers Parallel Monitoring of On-Air Signals and Other Sources

Specifically designed for radio broadcasting, the four-channel desktop unit features two AES3 digital (XLR) inputs that integrate all metering options required in radio broadcasting.

The latest introduction to RTW’s TouchMonitor series of cutting-edge metering and monitoring solutions, the TMR7 is based on the TM7 TouchMonitor, featuring a similar flexible, modular configuration. As with the TM7, the TMR7 also includes a seven-inch touch screen and is available as a desktop unit, fitted or as an OEM unit with 16 audio inputs. The versatile TM7 supports all professional audio metering applications.

Separate true peak and PPM instruments, as well as a vectorscope and correlator for evaluating stereo signals, are available on each TMR7 input channel. Licensing options include an extensive loudness-meter implementation (EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-3/1771, ATSC A/85, ARIB) with graphical and numerical single-channel and summing views, as well as loudness range (LRA), MagicLRA and SPL metering. Licenses are also available for an optional real-time analyzer (RTA) and the Premium PPM package with moving-coil instruments.

The intuitive operating concept of the TouchMonitor range offers maximum flexibility. Users can move freely the scalable instruments to any position on the graphical surface, allowing them to personalize the entire screen area. Views, scaling and metering standards are separately definable for each signal source. In addition, the convenient on-screen help function makes setting up the unit simple.

The four audio inputs provided by the two AES3 ports are configurable for mono, stereo or multichannel sources, providing separate instruments for each source. Plus, the GPIO interface for overall control, the Ethernet port and the VGA output for external display units offer further functionality.

RTW will also display its latest 3G version of the popular, compact TM3 meter, the TM3-3G. This unit has 16 audio channels of 3G-SDI and, as with every other TM unit, conforms to the latest loudness specifications. Clear-Com Debuts Latest Matrix Frame for Eclipse HX Range at the 2013 NAB Show

New HX-Delta Frame Offers High Performance Across Multiple Production Spaces

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 8, 2013 ? Clear-Com®, a global leader in critical voice communications systems, will debut the newest addition to its line of Eclipse HX Digital Matrix Systems, the Eclipse HX-Delta Matrix Frame, at the 2013 NAB Show (Booth C8008). The Eclipse HX-Delta offers the connectivity and high capacity of a larger matrix system in a 3RU frame, giving broadcasters more flexible installation options.

The cost-effective and compact Eclipse HX-Delta system is optimal for installation across many different production environments, from mobile broadcast trucks to smaller or multi-level studios. The Eclipse HX-Delta intercom system provides two CPU cards for redundant system control, along with the option of up to four varied I/O frame cards and up to three interface modules in a 3RU frame. Instead of installing large system frames in just one location, the Eclipse HX-Delta gives broadcasters the option of building a distributed matrix system. This offers a more flexible workflow and permits shorter cable runs between system frames and intercom panels, cutting down on cabling costs. The size of Eclipse HX-Delta is a benefit for mobile truck installations where space is limited, but varied and complex connectivity is required.

The Eclipse HX-Delta frame uses all of the current Eclipse interface cards, such as the E-MADI64-HX 64 bi-directional channel card, the IVC-32-HX IP connection card and the E-Que Integra integrated wireless or E1/T1 trunking card, to name a few. In addition to the four interface card slots, the HX-Delta also provides three internal slots for interface modules. Interface modules allow the HX-Delta to integrate seamlessly with other third-party communication devices, such as telephones, two-way radios and camera intercoms.

The Eclipse HX systems, comprising the Eclipse HX-Omega, Eclipse HX-Median, Eclipse HX-PiCo and Eclipse HX-Delta matrices, along with the EHX Software, allow users to rapidly make system-wide changes. The TM3-3G seamlessly allows the TM3’s current hardware and software design to visualize, convert and replay 3G SDI signals in TV and video production and post production applications, offering a feature set unrivalled in its class. Attendees will also have the chance to win one of three TM3-3G or TM3 units that RTW will be raffling off during the show. The TouchMonitor TM3-3G is a compact yet versatile solution for metering, de-embedding and monitoring 3G SDI audio. It features a 4.3-inch touch screen for horizontal as well as vertical orientation, which can display any of the eight audio channels contained in a 3G-SDI stream. For that purpose, it includes a large number of graphical and numerical instruments showing single-channel and summing loudness bargraphs, PPM, true peak, SPL, loudness range (LRA), dialnorm and correlation. The TM3 offers comprehensive loudness metering in compliance with all globally relevant standards (EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-2/1771, ATSC A/85 and ARIB). It also features the Magic LRA mode, specifically designed by RTW, for intuitive visualization of the loudness range and integrated-loudness parameters.

If equipped with the corresponding software license option, the integrated de-embedder also outputs up to 16 audio channels from the 3G-SDI signal on eight AES3 two-channel ports. The output signals are independent from the visualized audio. In addition, the TM3-3G can be upgraded with a built-in monitoring controller license. This uses an on-screen fader for output-volume adjustment, a stereo output and phones out. The optional timecode license expands the feature set of the TM3-3G to allow external or SDI timecode signals to be decoded, displayed and used for additional functions.

The intuitive operating concept of the TM3 allows for quick and easy selection of presets that can be configured using RTW’s Devicer DC1 software (available for Mac OS X® and Windows®). Using custom presets, the user can easily switch between the various sources, loudness standards and instrument layouts. The configuration software allows users to freely scale and place the required instruments virtually anywhere on the screen.

Sound Devices Highlights New 4:4:4 Feature for PIX 240 And 240i at the 2013 NAB Show

Video Recorders Can Now Record 12-Bit, 4:4:4 Content to Apple ProRes 4444

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 4, 2013 — For attendees in search of the latest 4:4:4 recording solutions, Sound Devices showcases its latest upgrade to PIX 240 and PIX 240i Production Video Recorders at the 2013 NAB Show (Booth C2849). This new major update, available for all PIX customers free of charge, offers Apple ProRes 4444 recording from video sources over 3G-SDI (4:4:4 RGB or YCbCr). Recording 4:4:4 offers productions superior color precision for applications in chroma-keying, color-grading and multi-generational editing.

PIX 240 and 240i users now have the ability to record into Apple ProRes 4444, which offers impressive quality with 4:4:4 sources and workflows involving alpha channel transparency. With its 12-bit, 4:4:4 capability, the PIX 240 and 240i can record 330-Mbps Apple ProRes 4444 files that are perceptually indistinguishable from the original source material. Popular cameras with 4:4:4 capable outputs include the ARRI ALEXA, Canon C500 and Sony F3.

Additional features available in this latest v3.0 firmware update include time-code and recording status displays on the SDI and HDMI outputs, up to 500 ms of audio delay to compensate for multi-device picture delay, and selectable 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 video output independent from the source material.

Users can connect PIX 240 and 240i to cameras with HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, or HDMI and record directly to QuickTime using a range of different Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD codecs, including Apple ProRes 4444. Since PIX recorders use ProRes and DNxHD, files recorded in the field can be used directly in post production, making for simpler, faster workflows.

The PIX 240i’s high-performance five-inch, IPS-based LCD display is an accurate field monitor, providing users with immediate confirmation of framing, exposure, focus, audio metering and setup menu selections. It offers excellent color accuracy and contrast, great off-axis visibility and accurate motion tracking.

The built-in hardware scaler and frame rate converter allows PIX to output and record material at different resolutions and frame rates than supported by the camera. Conversion between HD and SD, with and without anamorphic conversion, is available.

The audio circuitry of the PIX recorders is based on Sound Devices’ award-winning 7-Series digital audio recorders. The low-noise (-128 dBu EIN), high-headroom, high-bandwidth inputs are mic/line switchable and include limiters, high-pass filters and phantom power.

The HDMI-only PIX 220 and PIX 220i video recorders also gain new features available in the new version 3.0 update, including Apple ProRes 4444 recording, time-code and recording status displays on HDMI outputs, and up to 500 ms of audio delay to compensate for multi-device picture delay.

CLEAR-COM UNVEILS FURTHER ENHANCEMENTS TO ITS TEMPEST DIGITAL WIRELESS INTERCOMS AT THE 2013 NAB SHOW

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 3, 2013 ? Clear-Com®, a global leader in critical voice communications systems, announces further enhancements to its Tempest Digital Wireless Intercoms at the 2013 NAB Show (Booth C8008). Included among the latest offerings are a new Tempest®900 BeltStation and a Remote Line Extender. These solutions further enhance the systems’ use for broadcasters requiring ultra-portable wireless communications in RF-rich environments.

The Tempest line of feature-rich wireless intercoms comprises the 2.4 GHz Tempest®2400 and the 900 MHz Tempest900 wireless systems in either a two- or four-channel offering. Both Tempest systems deliver cutting-edge RF technologies to ensure interference-free communications for mobile productions and broadcast facilities. The Tempest2400 offers a Seamless Roaming feature, which provides broadcasters with continuous wireless coverage across an expanded production space. The Seamless Roaming feature allows BeltStation users to migrate between as many as 16 different Tempest BaseStations (coverage areas or zones), allowing audio professionals to focus on critical production cues rather than on the settings of their wireless BeltStations. Equipped with an advanced Planar Inverted-F Antenna (PIFA), the new BeltStation has an increased range, allowing more wireless coverage. Becoming increasingly more popular in the mobile phone market, a PIFA is low profile and has an omnidirectional signal pattern, which means it can receive a connection from any direction. Backwards compatible with Tempest900 firmware version 3.0, the new BeltStations will continue to operate within the 900MHz frequency band and are fully compatible with all versions of the Tempest900 BaseStations and BeltStations. The longer wavelengths and wider symbol width in this band allow the system’s signals to break through dense walls and other structural objects more readily, increasing the range for users and reducing any potential loss of audio.

The new Tempest Remote Transceiver Line Extender increases the systems’ cable run distance of a remote antenna by 3,000 feet (914m) with one Line Extender or 2,000 feet (609m) per Line Extender if using more than one Line Extender. This allows for the deployment of larger systems with longer cable runs from the BaseStation. A total of three Line Extenders can be connected to provide total coverage of up to 7,500 feet (2286m).

Based at RTW’s headquarters in Cologne, Germany, Hofland will oversee all of RTW’s international sales in different regions around the world.

In its more than 45-year history, RTW has consistently experienced increasing global customer demand, especially as more countries adopt loudness regulations. In his new role, Hofland will work to further this success in markets beyond Germany and the surrounding European countries, working with current customers in South America, Canada, Australia, the Asia-Pacific regions and parts of Europe. Sound Devices Welcomes Dr. Steve Popovich as Software Engineer

New Addition Furthers Company’s Commitment to Creating Cutting-Edge Products

REEDSBURG, WI, MARCH 19, 2013 — Sound Devices, experts in audio and video products for field production, is pleased to announce that industry veteran Dr. Steve Popovich has joined its engineering team as Staff Firmware/Algorithm Engineer. Popovich will work directly with the Sound Devices research and development team to further enhance the company’s range of firmware and software algorithms for its audio and video products. Popovich brings with him a strong background in audio, systems engineering and software algorithm creation—a unique skill set that will further bolster Sound Devices’ software development efforts.

“Steve is a very talented software coder whom we’ve had the privilege of working with in the past. He has made big contributions with MixAssist on the 788T and other important algorithm developments,” says Matt Anderson, President of Sound Devices. “With more than two decades of experience in the industry, he is a welcome addition to the Sound Devices family. Popovich’s background in acoustical signal processing began at Digisonix LLC, where he was Director of Research, developing active sound and vibration control technologies applied to silencing HVAC, automotive, aerospace and industrial noise. Since then, he has served in a diverse set of technical and engineering roles in electronic circuit manufacturing, DSP algorithms and embedded software applied to sound, electric motors and vehicle system electronics. His past work has also included supporting audio-related algorithm and software development for videoconferencing products at VTEL.

Popovich most recently served as a faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Platteville (UWP), where he participated in the creation of a collaborative program between UWP and UW-Fox Valley in Menasha, Wisconsin. During this time, Popovich also provided DSP-related consulting services, including work for Sound Devices.
Popovich holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and has been named as inventor on 11 patents.
