Sound Devices 664 Field Production Mixer Receives Nomination for The Cinema Audio Society’s Technical Achievement Award

REEDSBURG, WI, JANUARY 31, 2013 — Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, is pleased to announce that its 664 Production Mixer has been nominated for a Cinema Audio Society (CAS) Technical Achievement Award in the production category.

The 664 Field Production Mixer is the new flagship in Sound Devices’ line of portable audio mixers. The intuitive 664 has six input channels and four output buses. All inputs and outputs are recordable to both CF and SD cards. This unprecedented amount of I/O connectivity and recording capability makes the 664 perfect for any portable production application.

The 664 has six ultra-low noise, high-dynamic-range analog inputs. These transformer-less preamps accept mic- or line-level signals, and include analog peak limiters, high-pass filters, input trim controls and direct outputs. Input connectors 1 and 6 can be selected to accept AES42 or AES3 digital signals

In complex multi-camera productions, output flexibility is essential. The 664 can send its main left/right outputs to three cameras simultaneously. Two additional output buses, X1 and X2, appear on balanced TA3 connectors. AES3 digital outputs are individually selected to appear on the main XLR and multi-pin output connectors.

The 664 can record each of its inputs and four output buses for 10 record tracks. Recordings are saved to CompactFlash and SD cards. Recordings are either 16- or 24-bit broadcast WAV files, with extensive metadata. All popular production sampling rates are supported. When used with a CL-6 Input Expander, the 664 records 16 tracks, 12 inputs and four output buses.

The mixer’s built-in, rock-steady Ambient time code generator allows multiple devices to operate in synchronization. The 664 can operate as a time code master clock, or its clock can be jammed from an external time code. A helpful time code compare utility shows the difference between internal and external time codes.

This year’s winners will be announced at the 49th annual CAS Awards on Saturday, February 16th at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.

Sound Devices Unveils New 4:4:4 Feature for PIX 240 and 240i

Video Recorders Can Now Record 12-Bit, 4:4:4 Content to Apple ProRes 4444

REEDBSBURG, WI, JANUARY 2, 2013 — Sound Devices, announces its latest major upgrade to the PIX 240 and PIX 240i Production Video Recorders. This new update, available for all PIX customers free of charge, offers Apple ProRes 4444 recording from video sources over 3G-SDI (4:4:4 RGB or YCbCr). Recording 4:4:4 offers productions superior color precision for applications in chroma-keying, color-grading and multi-generational editing.

PIX 240 and 240i users now have the ability to record into Apple ProRes 4444, which offers impressive quality with 4:4:4 sources and workflows involving alpha channel transparency. With its 12-bit, 4:4:4 capability, the PIX 240 and 240i can record 330-Mbps Apple ProRes 4444 files that are perceptually indistinguishable from the original source material. Popular cameras with 4:4:4 capable outputs include the ARRI ALEXA, Canon C500 and Sony F3.

Additional features available in this latest v3.0 firmware update include time-code and recording status displays on the SDI and HDMI outputs, up to 500 ms of audio delay to compensate for multi-device picture delay, and selectable 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 video output independent from the source material.

Users can connect PIX 240 and 240i to cameras with HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, or HDMI and record directly to QuickTime using a range of different Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD codecs, including Apple ProRes 4444. Since PIX recorders use ProRes and DNxHD, files recorded in the field can be used directly in post production, making for simpler, faster workflows.

The PIX 240i’s high-performance five-inch, IPS-based LCD display is an accurate field monitor, providing users with immediate confirmation of framing, exposure, focus, audio metering, and setup menu selections. It offers excellent color accuracy and contrast, great off-axis visibility, and accurate motion tracking.

The built-in hardware scaler and frame rate converter allows PIX to output and record material at different resolutions and frame rates than supported by the camera. Conversion between HD and SD, with and without anamorphic conversion, is available.

The audio circuitry of the PIX recorders is based on Sound Devices’ award-winning 7-Series digital audio recorders. The low-noise (-128 dBu EIN), high-headroom, high-bandwidth inputs are mic/line switchable and include limiters, high-pass filters and phantom power.

The HDMI-only PIX 220 and PIX 220i video recorders also gain new features available in the new version 3.0 update, including Apple ProRes 4444 recording, time-code and recording status displays on HDMI outputs, and up to 500 ms of audio delay to compensate for multi-device picture delay.

Clear-Com Takes The University Of Salford To The Head Of The Class

Eclipse Matrix, V-Series Panels and FreeSpeak Integra Wireless System
Enable Communications Across The Multilevel Facility

SALFORD, UK, 21 NOVEMBER, 2012Clear-Com, a global leader in critical voice communication systems, is allowing students at the University of Salford’s £30-million digital learning, teaching and research facility at MediaCityUK to communicate like production professionals. Students and staff across the multilevel campus use Clear-Com’s Eclipse-Median digital matrix intercom system, V-Series lever key-panels and FreeSpeak digital wireless beltpacks to coordinate the productions of one-on-one interviews, news programmes, panel discussions and music series.

The Clear-Com installation at the University has vastly improved production workflow with a set of intercom systems at every key communication position in the facility. The new building is made up of three floors, and nearly every room on each of those floors either has a V-Series key-panel or FreeSpeak wireless beltpack. This includes the editing and post-production spaces located on the second floor and two live TV studios—Studios A and B—along with the galleries and a digital performance lab on the ground level. All beltpack and panels are routed through the Eclipse-Median matrix. This gives students and staff immediate access to communications wherever they are located in the building, whenever it is needed.

“In our old facility, we didn’t have a system for multilevel, group conversations,” says Ash Tidball, TV Studio Manager for the University of Salford at MediaCityUK. “Our previous intercom was very simple. You were in the studio, you had four channels, and you could talk to each other in that studio, and that was it. Coming into the new building, we wanted a system that would allow us to converse in different areas of the site, but without the crosstalk that might occur due to our close proximity to the BBC. The main goal was being able to talk to whomever we needed to, without interference.”

The Clear-Com equipment has accomplished this for Tidball, his colleagues and students. Not only does the FreeSpeak integration to the matrix offer up to 40 wireless beltpack users, but it also provides six channels per beltpack for many group and point-to-point connections.

“We have the Clear-Com system set up so we can talk just to production, sound or the floor techs,” adds Tidball. “Or we can select all three of those groups and speak with them all at the same time. It’s a very expansive system.”

Operating within the license-free 1.8GHz-1.93 GHz frequency band, away from the crowded spectrum where other wireless devices operate, FreeSpeak delivers a reliable, uninterrupted signal. FreeSpeak also combines DECT and wireless auto-roaming technologies to allow users to move about the campus freely without fading or losing connection.

The Clear-Com Eclipse is highly modular, a key specification Tidball and his colleagues had wanted in the intercom system for the new facility. The Eclipse and IP-enabled V-Series panels operate on the facility’s Ethernet and fibre network, making future upgrades simple. Further, the Eclipse Configuration Software (ECS) simplifies programming and automates the setup of intercom communications. This is especially useful in the frenetically paced work environment, where operators may not always have time to manually program the system. Staff members can also log onto the ECS through any of the main terminals in the building, conveniently changing inputs and outputs as needed.

RTW TMR7 TOUCHMONITOR MAKES ITS ASIAN DEBUT AT INTER BEE 2012

Designed for Radio Broadcasting, Four-Channel Metering Solution Offers Parallel Monitoring of On-Air Signals and Other Sources

TOKYO, JAPAN, NOVEMBER 14, 2012 – RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, is proud to announce the debut today of its new TMR7 TouchMonitor at the Toyo Corporation booth (Hall 4, 4305) during Inter Bee 2012. Specifically designed for radio broadcasting, the four-channel desktop unit features two AES3 digital (XLR) inputs that integrate all metering options required in radio broadcasting for a solution made to measure. The TMR7 is also making its European debut today, at the SATIS Expo in Paris, France.

The technological basis of the TMR7 is the TM7 TouchMonitor with its flexible modular configuration. Similar to the TM7, the TMR7 also includes a seven-inch touch screen, and is available as a desktop unit, fitted or as an OEM unit with 16 audio inputs. The versatile TM7 supports all professional audio metering applications.

“Based on our TM7 all-round unit, the TMR7 TouchMonitor is specifically targeted at users in radio broadcasting environments,” says Michael Kahsnitz, head of engineering at RTW. “It integrates all features required in radio production, two stereo inputs and extensive local configurability in an attractively priced package.”

Separate true peak and PPM instruments as well as a vectorscope and correlator for evaluating stereo signals are available on each TMR7 input channel. Licensing options include an extensive loudness-meter implementation (EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-3/1771, ATSC A/85, ARIB) with graphical and numerical single-channel and summing views as well as loudness range (LRA), MagicLRA and SPL metering. Licenses are also available for an optional realtime analyzer (RTA) and the Premium PPM package with moving-coil instruments.

The intuitive operating concept of the TouchMonitor range offers maximum flexibility. Users can move freely scalable instruments to any position on the graphical surface, allowing them to personalize the entire screen area. Views, scaling and metering standards are separately definable for each signal source. In addition, the convenient on-screen help function makes setting up the unit a breeze.

The four audio inputs provided by the two AES3 ports are configurable for mono, stereo or multichannel sources, providing separate instruments for each source. Plus, the GPIO interface for overall control, the Ethernet port and the VGA output for external display units offer further functionality.

First starting out as a musician, he spent years performing professionally and taught recording technologies at an accredited Midwest media college. RTW DEBUTS 3G SDI INTERFACE AND 7.1 SURROUND FORMAT FOR SURROUNDCONTROL AND SURROUNDMONITOR LINES AT IBC 2012

Enhanced Surround Sound Analyzer Now Supports Blu-ray Disc 7.1 Format

AMSTERDAM, SEPTEMBER 9, 2012 – RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, will introduce new options and functional enhancements for its SurroundControl 31900/31960 and SurroundMonitor 11900 ranges at IBC 2012 (Stand 8.E76). The SD device versions of these products are shipping with a new 3G-enabled SDI de-embedder and Dolby(r) E, Dolby(r) DD+ and Dolby(r) AC-3 decoders.

In addition to several minor improvements, the current device firmware now supports the 7.1 DD+ format, ensuring compliance with current 7.1 surround formats for Blu-ray discs and other applications. The 7.1 DD+ format has been implemented alongside the existing 7.1 Cinema format on the SurroundControl and SurroundMonitor systems.

The Surround Sound Analyzer brings the clear and intuitive display method of the original 5.1 format to the enhanced 7.1 arena. Similar to the center channel, the unit displays the newly added side channels using color-coded lines. This way, the user can assess the relationship between the side channels and the phantom sources produced by the lateral-front and rear channels at a glance.

The new software release, featuring a correlation display depicting all possible 7.1 signal combinations, is ideal for professional users working with the 7.1 format. The multicorrelator display has been expanded to read out low-frequency phase errors of all channels versus the LFE, allowing users to make any corrections before phase problems show up acoustically or in bass-management systems.

Featuring the integrated monitoring controller, as well as an optional 3G SDI de-embedder and Dolby(r) decoder, the SurroundControl 31900/31960 flagship unit integrates seamlessly into the production workflows of today’s broadcast applications. The units implement all major loudness standards, including EBU R128, ITU-R BS.1770-2/1771, ATSC A/85 and ARIB. RTW’s Loudness Range (LRA) instrument features the MagicLRA mode, a simple and intuitive view displaying integrated loudness and loudness variances within short time periods. Apart from the monitoring controller, the eight-channel SurroundMonitor 11900 implements all the same metering functions from the SurroundControl systems.
