DPA Microphones Bring Exceptional Clarity To Suede’s Guitars

Indie-rock stalwarts Suede, which released its sixth album Bloodsports in March 2013, recently recorded a live acoustic session for Absolute Radio at the world-famous Abbey Road studios in London.

The equipment line-up for this important gig incorporated three DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones, which were chosen for their clarity and exceptional audio quality.

Suede’s Neil Codling, who plays keyboards and rhythm guitar, was instrumental in the choice of microphones, specifying them for his own Martin D28 guitar and also for Richard Oakes’ Gibson J200 lead guitar and Matt Osman’s Dean acoustic bass. DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network was happy to supply the microphones.

“When I have downtime from Suede, I play in Penguin Cafe, which has a different acoustic flavour: violins, viola, cello, double bass, ukuleles, Venezuelan cuatros,” Codling says. “Whatever you point the DPA d:vote 4099 at, they seem to capture the essence of the instrument, its subtle timbres and the full breadth of its dynamic range. You get warmth without boom, intimacy without overpowering mids, clarity without brittleness. You just point them at the sound source and they sound great.”

Getting the opportunity to use DPA d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones for the Abbey Road session was something Neil Codling jumped at – and he also enjoyed being able to acquaint other members of Suede to DPA’s high-end audio quality.

As a high-end solution, DPA is offering podium microphones that incorporate the modular capsules from its d:dicate Recording Microphones, which are acclaimed for their exceptional linear frequency responses, high SPL and superior gain before feedback. These new podium microphones combine the state-of-the-art d:dicate capsules with any of the company’s newly introduced modular active booms and modular active cables. With several capsules to choose from, DPA customers can access the exact microphone and boom or cable combination to meet their needs.

These directional gooseneck microphones, which use interference tubes and pre-polarized backplates to ensure speech intelligibility, were originally devised on request from the Nobel Prize organization. In search of a dedicated podium solution for its 2012 Nobel Peace Prize presentation at Oslo City Hall in Norway, the organization required a microphone that could stand up to the acoustical challenges of its auditorium. To fit the need, DPA Microphones adapted its existing miniature capsule to give an off-axis frequency response that negated room reverberation while preserving the needed on-axis sensitivity for voice level. The company also positioned the capsule on a delicate gooseneck stand, which encompasses a sleek Scandinavian design. The result was so well received that the microphone was quickly adopted as a standard DPA product and is now available to all installation customers. Canadian Broadcasting Vancouver Taps Jampro for High-Power FM Antenna System

Sacramento, CA — Jampro Antennas, headquartered in Sacramento, California, was awarded a contract by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) to supply a high-power FM antenna system to provide very specific directional coverage of the Vancouver, British Columbia DMA. Broadcasting from a tower atop 4,754 foot high Mount Seymour, a Jampro model JAHD Arrowhead Dipole panel antenna will provide the CBC with above average pattern stability and axial control so as not to interfere with adjacent U.S. border stations.

“This JAHD system provides the power and specific coverage that CBC requires, but also the sustainability to survive an extremely harsh mountain environment compounded by heavy winter icing of the Pacific Maritime climate,” said Alex M. Perchevitch, president of Jampro.

In addition to the 100kw JAHD FM panel antenna, Jampro provided an equipment package consisting of a high power Jampro RCCC constant impedance combiner to combine 5 frequencies, along with an RCPU patch panel/ power splitter system, Jampro Proline rigid transmission line and related RF accessories.

The JAHD is designed for Bands I, II (FM), and III and is easily adaptable for multi-station use. The antenna can be config¬ured to provide various azimuth and elevation patterns. By using op¬tional beam tilt and null fill, the elevation pattern can be shaped to maximize coverage. The design of this circularly polarized antenna may be configured to include varying levels of vertical polarization, with results ranging from small amounts of elliptical polarization to full circular polarization.

Jampro’s RCCC FM Constant Impedance Combiner family has a compact modular design that can be configured to fit into the smallest transmitter rooms. A simple modular design allows the easy addition of frequencies as needed. These combiners use temperature compensated Bandpass Filters which have an integrated heat sink top. This keeps filters cool and locked on frequencies.

The Jampro RCPU is a low effort patch panel with rock-solid connection and low insertion loss. No tools are needed to make patch, rather a positive lock mechanism assures quick and easy re-direction of the RF signal path. It’s ideal for patching RF feeds to emergency antenna, alternate main/auxiliary transmitter, filter by-pass, master station combiner re-route and test point insertion. Philippines’ Solar Entertainment Awards Three Site VHF Antenna Contracts to Jampro

Sacramento, CA — Jampro Antennas of Sacramento, California, was recently awarded three antenna systems contracts by the Solar Entertainment Corporation of Mandaluyong City, Philippines. The order included new VHF antenna systems for tower sites supporting Solar’s Channels 5, 6 and 7 located in the cities of Cebu and Davao.

For Channel 5 in Cebu and Channel 6 in Davao, Solar Entertainment ordered the JHD-LV2 VHF antennas for each site along with rigid transmission line, and Rigid Line Kits.

For Channel 7 in Davao, a JHD-HV4 VHF antenna was specified along with dual runs of rigid transmission line, an RCPU power splitter/patch panel system, and Rigid Line Kits.

The JHD-LV2 antenna is a half-wave spaced, dual horizontally polarized dipole flat panel antenna system with a pressurized feed system designed for Low Band VHF Channels 2 through 6, Band I covering 54 to 88 MHz.

The JHD-HV4 antenna is also a half wave spaced dual horizon¬tally polarized dipole flat panel antenna system with pressurized feed, but engineered for high band VHF for Channels 7 through 13 on Band III at 174 to 230 MHz.

Both JHD models are built of hot dipped galvanized steel, well suited to the tropical weather of the Philippines. These antennas have proven to have excellent bandwidth with typical VSWR. DPA Microphones Appoints Niels Jørgen Øhrgaard

Øhrgaard joins DPA Microphones from Reson where he was Executive VP Global Sales and Marketing. He has also held similar positions at other high tech companies including Hasselblad A/S and ScanView A/S – Purup Eskofot A/S.

Jünger Audio Unveils the V*AP Voice Processor To Asian Broadcasters

Dynamics specialist Jünger Audio will be showing its new V*AP two channel voice processor at Broadcast Asia 2013 (Booth 5E6-01). This will give broadcasters in the region their first opportunity to view a product that is specifically designed to make life easier for engineers working in radio stations and TV production voice-over studios.

V*AP, the latest addition to Jünger Audio’s award-winning *AP family of products, draws on the company’s extensive experience with previous Voice Processing devices such as its v-series, but adds new tools and algorithms to create a new, easier and more efficient approach to voice processing with no compromise in sound quality.

V*AP’s main task is to offer perfect control of microphone recordings. Jünger Audio has also included processing such as HP/LP filtering, dynamic section, full parametric EQ and de-essing. All of the V*AP functions can be easily set up by the audio engineer, making it hassle free for any journalist or reporter to use it. Jünger Audio has also provided a dedicated leveler combined with a voice over circuit to help auto-mix voice programs into loudness-based broadcasting on the fly. Using the optional SDI I/O card automated voice over for embedded audio becomes an attractive feature of the V*AP.

Available as either an insert into a mixing desk or as a stand-alone unit, V*AP offers interfaces that allow integration in existing environments via an AES insert. The unit can also be used with an optional analogue board that adds two high quality mic-preamps.

Another key feature of V*AP is the inclusion of Spectral Signature™, Jünger Audio’s automatic spectral sound management algorithm that dynamically controls spectral balance to create consistent voice recordings meeting a dedicated station sound. Spectral Signature™ can automatically analyze the recording of the voice to create a sound fingerprints that become the reference the algorithm matches to on all subsequent live recordings.

At Broadcast Asia 2013, Jünger Audio will also show its ground-breaking M*AP audio loudness processor, which combines an audio monitor controller and a loudness measurement device in one unit, thus providing comprehensive quality control and loudness monitoring for anyone working in a production or broadcast environment.

Designed for quality checking surround (5.1) and/or stereo programs, M*AP can be used for live monitoring and also to ensure compliance with today’s standards and regulations (ITU 1770-3, ATSC A/85 or EBU R128).

The unit comes with alarm signals that alert the operator when pre-set loudness thresholds are exceeded, and these signals can be delivered by simple GPOs and/or SNMP traps, which carry actual loudness values. Loudness measurements can be performed over a long run or over a fraction of a program, or both. These measurements can be triggered by automation systems via GPIs or via the network – or even manually by buttons of the X*AP remote panel.

Alongside loudness measurements, M*AP also offers functionality for acoustical QA. It has eight speaker outputs that allow for A/B checking of stereo compatibility of a surround downmix through alternative speakers, as well as via L/R front speakers.

Peter Pörs, Managing Director of Jünger Audio, says: “By incorporating 3G, HD and SD auto detection, M*AP gives users the option of dealing with all 16 channels of SDI embedded audio at the same time. This means that you can listen to one program while permanently logging the loudness of two (5.1 +2 mode) or four (4×2 mode) programs. It is also possible to send further embedded programs to M*AP’s AES outputs to feed a third party instrument for analyzing and/or display.”

For no extra cost, the M*AP’s SDI board acts as an embedder as well and comes with video delay to compensate for any kind of audio delay. This feature is ideal for those looking to maintain lip sync in QA suites or control rooms. M*AP also features a built-in Dolby® Metadata generator and an optional Dolby® decoder that allows users to decode Dolby-E, Dolby-D (AC-3) and Dolby Digital plus (E-AC-3).

Sound Devices Offers Enhanced Recording and File Transfer Options for PIX 260i Users

Latest Firmware Update, Version 1.02, Now Available for Free Download

LOS ANGELES, MAY 15, 2013 — In an effort to continue to streamline workflows for production and post-production environments with its rack-mounted PIX 260i Production Video Recorder, Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, now offers expanded audio and video recording and file transfer capabilities with its newest firmware update, Version 1.02. Available as a free download to all PIX 260i users, this latest version will be highlighted at Cine Gear 2013 (Booth 94).

With Version 1.02, all drives are now formatted as exFAT instead of UDF. While this new drive formatting is available, it is still possible for PIX 260i users to record and play back from UDF drives for compatibility with the PIX 220i and PIX 240i. Users have the ability to set each PIX 260i drive independently to Ethernet File Transfer (Network) mode. This offers the convenience of transferring files over a network while the PIX 260i records new data. Drives will also automatically switch to the Ethernet File Transfer mode when full. In addition, the end user can now read and write data to PIX 260i drives over Ethernet. The update also enables the PIX 260i to provide users with both simultaneous recording to multiple drives or sequential mode, recording to the next successive drive as drives become full. A 10-second (maximum) pre-record buffer for the audio-only mode has also been added.

GeoBroadcast Solutions Names Jampro Antennas as Exclusive Supplier for MaxxCasting, ZoneCasting Networks

Exceptional antenna directivity supports maximized and targeted signal delivery across single-frequency FM radio transmission networks

CHICAGO, May 14, 2013 — Terrestrial radio innovators GeoBroadcast Solutions (GBS) announce Jampro Antennas as a technology partner to advance its vision of helping radio broadcasters maximize over-the-air signals and grow revenues.

Jampro joins Harris Broadcast as exclusive technology suppliers for GBS MaxxCasting and ZoneCasting networks. MaxxCasting expands FM signal coverage areas, allowing broadcasters to take full advantage of their FCC-allotted spectrum. ZoneCasting, pending FCC approval, brings hyper-localization to radio through targeted over-the-air content delivery.

Jampro will supply all antennas, combiners and support equipment related to installation of these components. The custom antennas are specially designed for these networks, providing the advanced directivity required to ensure both maximized market coverage and highly-specific regional targeting.

Peter Handy, CEO of GeoBroadcast Systems, notes that Jampro brought a flexible approach to their antenna designs that uniquely fit requirements for both MaxxCasting and ZoneCasting deployments. That flexibility extends to custom designs that meet the needs of each broadcaster — highly important as coverage patterns and targeting requirements will differ for each market.

DPA Microphones Opens A New Office In Hong Kong

Following a record year for sales in the Asia and Pacific regions, DPA Microphones is consolidating its success by opening a new regional office in Hong Kong.

Headed by Ken Kimura, DPA’s general manager for the APAC region, the new office signals DPA’s commitment to its partners and customers by acting as a hub for sales, marketing and after-sales service. It will also enable the company to expand its sales network and develop new business channels in market sectors that have yet to discover the benefit of DPA’s high quality microphone technology and products.

Kimura, who was previously based in Shanghai, says: “Establishing our new office in Hong Kong makes sound economic and geographic sense. By basing our office here we can significantly expand our reach as well as visibility within the entire region and thereby aim our ambitions much higher.”

During the last trading year, DPA’s sales have been on the increase in virtually every APAC country with some showing growth as high as 40%. This incredible success has been achieved by DPA developing strong partnerships with its distributors and dealers so that they can fully support their customers.
