Store & Play
The next-generation Barix Store and Play solution receives its debut at the 2014 NAB Show. While live streaming audio typically doesn’t require a large amount of network space, many businesses have limited network bandwidth to begin with – or otherwise want more control over what they are playing at what time.

SoundScape

SoundScape adds in-store radio flexibility through support of live streams and stored content playback over the same network, with seamless switching between the two applications. The network-wide management capabilities of SoundScape further reduces costs and complexity by enabling private radio networks to remotely deliver firmware updates, create and monitor logs, and track play reports for sponsors. Barix IP Audio Solutions Help Soma FM Grow Radio Footprint

Multichannel internet broadcaster specifies Barix Exstreamer 500 devices for reliable, cost-efficient and high-quality HD2 broadcasts at radio stations nationwide

— IP audio and control specialist Barix is helping multichannel internet radio broadcaster Soma FM grow its presence in the over-the-air broadcast space, with Soma FM specifying reliable, affordable Barix IP Audio solutions for radio stations receiving its programs.

Soma FM is a multichannel internet radio broadcaster offering 27 channels of indie-leaning programs exploring rock, electronic and other music formats. The listener-supported, commercial-free service streams its programs on its website and via a Roku streaming app in addition to supporting over-the-air HD Radio side channels, otherwise known as HD2 feeds.

Soma FM owner and president Rusty Hodge says that Barix helps to minimize costs for his over-the-air radio clients, which include KPBS-FM in San Diego, while providing radio stations with reliable, high-quality audio streams.

“The only other solution we considered for signal decoding and playout were desktop-class machines with professional grade audio cards, and these were three times the cost of Barix,” said Hodge. “Barix eliminates the need to worry about problems like software upgrades and security issues. They are compact, and don’t consume much power. Foremost, they are extremely reliable.”

The last point is the most tangible benefit for Hodge, as he also employs Barix Instreamer audio encoders for remote broadcasts. One recent remote project focused on encoding live broadcast feeds from the Kennedy Space Center to cover space shuttle launches. Soma FM also recently produced live broadcasts from the DEFCON hacker conference in Las Vegas.

Additionally, Soma FM encodes police scanner feeds to enhance certain electronic music programs heard on its website. “Think of it as using Barix as a mixer,” said Hodge. “We connect the scanner to the Instreamer, which injects a priority stream over the music feed. It allows us to do something that you often hear in live or recorded electronic music but is unique for radio broadcasting.”

Hodge also acts as a consultant for large commercial radio networks, and he often specifies Barix solutions for these stations based on his experience. He especially likes the Exstreamer 500, which offers broadcast-quality inputs and outputs among other professional features. Reliability aside, Hodge points out that Barix produces excellent audio quality, with flexible format and bitrate options to meet various network and bandwidth requirements.

“We rely on Barix solutions to feed the broadcasters, as they typically don’t want super hi-fi feeds due to network congestion issues,” said Hodge. “They simply plug in the devices at the stations and get great sounding broadcast audio. And to date we have never had to reboot or power cycle one of their devices.”

Jünger Audio Redefines Audio Processing at IBC 2013

Dynamics specialist Jünger Audio will use the IBC 2013 platform (Hall 10, Stand A49) to announce a new direction of creating solution based packages for its entire product range – one that is designed to make it much easier for customers to identify the exact processing solution they are looking for.

“As there is now a trend among some of our customers to use products like the T*AP (Television Audio Processor) for applications such as radio or PA, we decided to separate processing hardware from the feature set,” says Jünger Audio’s Managing Director Peter Pörs. “This change acknowledges the way in which many of our customers are working and allows Jünger Audio’s highly recognized functionality packages previously known as T*AP and M*AP to live on in common hardware.”

The new strategy will see Jünger Audio’s key hardware products marketed as universal processing platforms, with each one capable of handling transcoding and routing, as well as audio processing, and offering various ways of control including through automation or third party equipment. Instead of specific product names such as T*AP, M*AP and V*AP, Jünger Audio will now use these names to identify application packages. Once customers have chosen a processor with the right channel count and specified the application area they want to address (radio, TV, production, post production etc.), Jünger Audio will deliver the relevant software package with the audio processor box of choice to create a solution that exactly matches the customer’s needs.

“By using a universal processing platform, the new modularity of our product range will get as close as possible to each customer’s workflow,” Peter Pörs says. “Managing audio loudness with our renowned non-destructive Level Magic™ algorithm will be one of many features, along with 3G, HD and SD SDI embedded audio handling and high quality limiters, compressors, delays and equalisers. This modularity concept will also allow for specific coding hardware to decode, encode or transcode Dolby®-E, Dolby®-D (AC-3) and Dolby® Digital plus (E-AC-3), as well as HE-AAC formats.”

Pörs adds that the proliferation of distribution formats has made audio quality control during production more important than ever.

“In the past it might have been sufficient to monitor only the main mix, ignoring all transport coding and metadata implications,” he says. “But with all the simulcast formats in use today, the production team needs to simulate the home listening experience by real time metadata emulation. Adding this functionality to a hardware based monitoring controller, combined with loudness measurement and logging features, is the feature set of our QC and production monitoring solution M*AP.

“We are clearly refocusing on production and the fantastic first feedback we have received for our new voice processor V*AP evidently signals that we’re on the right track with our range of products. The V*AP offers all the processing arsenal you need for highest quality voice processing including mic preamps, compressors, expanders, limiters, and voice optimized equalizers. The V*AP also includes a voice optimized version of Spectral Signature, a process using individual spectral reference footprints as a real-time comparison reference for incoming audio, adding filtering only if it is necessary to generate spectral consistency.”

Pörs adds that the company’s extensive product range will now include a plug-in version of Level Magic™ in native plugin formats (VST, RTAS, AU, AAX, Audiosuite, etc.) for MAC and PC, 32- and 64-bit systems. This will be launched at IBC 2013.

“For the first time ever it will be possible for production staff using equipment such as Pro Tools to control audio loudness using our Level Magic™ algorithm,” he says. StreamGuys First CDN to Market with Ogg Opus Audio Content Delivery

Streaming media provider will support radio broadcasters with interest in delivering live streams for emerging format

BAYSIDE, CALIFORNIA, June 10, 2013StreamGuys will give radio broadcasters more options for high-quality, low-latency audio streams through support of Ogg Opus, the new versatile, open-source audio codec standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Its royalty-free status eliminates licensing fees for broadcasters, minimizing costs while enhancing the online listening experience.

Ogg Opus incorporates technology from the Skype-developed, speech-oriented SILK codec and the low-latency CELT, developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation as a next-generation music codec. Montgomery adds that its royalty-free status further simplifies adoption through compatibility with free media player software, including VLC, WinAmp and Firefox Mozilla, which natively supports Ogg Opus through its HTML5 audio tag.

Martinez emphasizes that StreamGuys will maintain its position as a codec-agnostic CDN, and simply offer Ogg Opus as a new option. He notes that StreamGuys’ cloud-based architecture is capable of simultaneously transcoding live feeds into multiple formats (mp3, HE-AAC, Ogg Vorbis, etc.) and bitrates to meet a variety of broadcaster requirements around the world.

Barix Cost-Efficiently Streams Live Worship Services to Local Radio for California Church

Allen Temple Baptist delivers services to those unable to attend using Barix IP audio solutions

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, December 10, 2012 — Audio over IP pioneer Barix AG is helping Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland, California stream its Sunday services to radio station KDIA-1640-AM with exceptional audio quality and low latency — and at a very low cost.

Allen Temple Baptist transmitted its services via telephone line to the radio station for more than 30 years, but was looking to become more cost-efficient while moving into the digital age. The church purchased a Barix Instreamer 100 for on-site encoding of live services, and an Exstreamer 100 for KDIA to receive and decode the audio.

MELBOURNE, FL/DENVER, April 3, 2012 — The 2012 NAB Show marks a new era for Harris Corporation’s (NYSE:HRS) Intraplex® family of studio-to-transmitter link (STL) solutions for radio broadcasters as the company introduces the IP Link 100, the first in a new range of low-cost, high-performance audio codecs that help customers deliver program audio affordably and reliably. Harris will debut the IP Link 100 at NAB (April 16-19, Las Vegas convention Center, Booth N2502).

The IP Link 100 is a compact solution for reliable program audio transport between two or more points, whether in an STL configuration, from studio-to-studio, or from a remote broadcast location to a studio for sports and live events. The IP Link 100 brings “always on” Intraplex technology to a very affordable price level, and incorporates distinct high-end features that cost extra on competing devices — or do not exist at all.

Harris brings several innovations to the IP Link 100:
• Dynamic Stream Splicing, a redundant delivery platform that merges two audio streams over the same or separate networks — ensuring seamless, intact delivery of program audio.
• Multicoding, an industry first that enables simultaneous delivery of audio in two different formats — including uncompressed audio for premium quality, and compressed audio formats for lower-bandwidth backup links.
• Automatic Backup to a plug-in USB drive or a local audio source in the event of IP connectivity loss.

The IP Link 100 begins shipping in September, with related product introductions on the horizon.

Three Sonnox Fraunhofer Pro-Codec Plug-ins To Be Won

OXFORD, UK: To mark the introduction of its new Fraunhofer Pro-Codec plug-in, Sonnox has announced a fun competition on Facebook, where three Pro-Codec’s will be awarded on September 1st !

Following a lengthy collaboration with mp3 creator Fraunhofer IIS, the resulting Pro-Codec software introduces real-time auditioning, encoding and decoding of audio, using Fraunhofer’s professional codecs, within a DAW environment.
