DPA Microphones Takes its Final Leap into the d:ep End

Company renames remaining mics in collection to reflect the popular ‘d:’ branding

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 18, 2013 – DPA Microphones is delighted to announce at the 135th International AES Convention (Booth 2551) that its 4060, 4080 and 4090 Miniature and 5100, 5006A, 5006-11A and 5015A Surround Microphones will be joining the ‘d:’ family of names. Building off the success of the company’s new “d:” branding, the current 4060, 4080 and 4090 Miniature Mics now fall into the d:screet™ Miniature Microphones group and the Five-channel surround solutions are henceforth known as the d:mension™ Surround Microphones.

DPA has also chosen to add the ever-popular 4066 and 4088 Miniature Headsets under the d:fine™ Headset Microphone category, and the mics will also receive an upgrade to coincide with the existing d:fines. Additionally, it’s new d:dicate™ Recording Microphone line combines the company’s best new and existing capsules and preamplifiers from the previous Reference Standard series.

“A few years ago, we decided to change the names of our new products to make them more recognizable and easy to remember,” says Christian Poulsen, CEO of DPA Microphones. “In the past, our products were branded with numbers, which were difficult to understand and remember unless you were a DPA aficionado. We wanted names that were more meaningful and more interesting. After some brainstorming, we decided on the ‘d:’ (colon) names. Starting with a ‘d’ made it easier to remember as it connects the mics to the DPA name, and leaving out the second letter gave it a graphic element that worked well with our new DPA design.”

Announced at DPA Microphones’ recent Partner Conference at the DPA Microphones Denmark headquarters, the unveiling of the new d:screet Miniature Microphone and d:mension Surround Microphone names is another step in the company’s plans for full “d:” branding. Each product category has been carefully planned out by the DPA Microphones team.

With the company’s 5100, 5006A, 5006-11A and 5015A Surround Microphone now grouped together under the d:mension Surround Microphone line, customers can easily swap between capsules and boom options. Comprised of the 4080 Miniature Cardioid Lavalier, as well as the 4060 and 4090 Omnidirectional Hi-Sens Microphones, the d:screet line also includes the company’s new 4098 Podium Microphones announced earlier this year.

“We found words starting with the letter ‘d’ that fit the significance to the product line,” continues Poulsen. “For instance, people are devoted to their instrument and to their sound, therefore our d:vote Instrument Microphones. The d:fine name was selected as we felt the microphone would define a new generation of headsets. The d:facto because the mic sets a new standard within vocal microphones and d:dicate for people who are dedicated to superior sound. Each name was introduced as there was significant updates within each product group.”

Now known as the DPA d:mension Surround Microphone, the 5100 is a compact microphone that provides users with ease of use and stunning sound quality. It is ideal for bringing truly engaging surround ambience to sport events, documentaries and other applications that especially require HDTV production. The d:mension 5006A, 5006-11A and 5015A are complete Surround Kits with five carefully factory-matched d:dicate microphones. The 5006A kit features d:dicate 4006A omni mics exclusively, while the 5006-11A is made up of a combination of the 4006A omni and 4011A cardioids mics and the 5015A is comprised of the 4015 wide cardioids.

Originally designed for use with wireless systems in theater, television and close-miked instrument applications, the d:screet 4060 capsule is highly unobtrusive, which lends itself to an exceedingly accurate omnidirectional pattern. Also a member of the d:screet family, the d:screet 4080 is well suited for broadcast, conference and other live performances in the studio or in the field. It is acoustically pre-equalized, which makes the voice more distinguishable and improves speech intelligibility.

The DPA d:screet 4090 is a high-quality omnidirectional condenser microphone with a uniquely natural and open sound, that is suitable for instrument miking applications in the studio or on the stage. Due to its remarkably linear frequency response in the 20 Hz to 20 kHz range, sound system engineers can also use the 4090 for sound system alignment, testing and tuning.

Sound Devices Introduces Improved Features for 664 Production Mixer at AES 2013

Latest Firmware Update Offers Enhanced Functionality

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 17, 2013 — Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, presents expanded recording capabilities, along with greater flexibility and ease-of-use outdoors for the company’s flagship 664 Production Mixer. Sound Devices showcases the benefits of the 664’s latest firmware update, Version 1.05, at the 135th International AES Convention (Gotham Sound and Communications, Booth 2738).

Sound Devices 664 features six ultra-low-noise, high-dynamic-range preamps that accept mic- or line-level signals and include analog peak limiters, high-pass filters, input trim control and direct outputs per channel. Featuring full analog audio paths for high-performance audio and superb power efficiency, the 664 also has numerous digital capabilities. Inputs 1 and 6 can be selected as AES3 or AES42 inputs for digital microphones, each with its own SRC for simplicity in system clocking. The 664’s analog output compliment includes four output buses. The L and R buses are on balanced XLR, 10-Pin and TA-3M connectors and on unbalanced TA-3M or 3.5mm connectors. Secondary output buses X1 and X2 are available on balanced TA-3M connectors. Users can route inputs and buses to four AES3 connections for eight digital outputs on the XLR and 10-pin connectors.

Firmware version 1.05 brings additional features to the already-powerful mixer, including greater flexibility and ease-of-use outdoors. The “LCD Daylight Display” mode incorporates a daylight-specific color scheme and solid bar metering option for improved readability in direct sunlight. Sound Devices has also incorporated additional front panel button shortcuts, including “LCD Daylight Display” mode (HP + SELECT encoders) and Phrase list (HP + RTN B/C) for fast entry of metadata notes. Version 1.05 also incorporates the shortcut for activating different setup tone modes. Users also have new “Track Names in Meters” options (without color gradient/ramp) that are selectable for either right- or left-side display.

With version 1.05, 664 now offers users Monophonic Broadcast WAV file support, with the ability to record up to 10 tracks to two cards, with up to three seconds of record pre-roll. If a card not optimized for multi-channel monophonic file recording is used, or if the monophonic 10-track limit is exceeded, a warning message is displayed on the LCD when starting a recording. Polyphonic mode or reducing track count is recommended. In addition, when formatted in the 664, SD cards 64 GB and larger are now automatically formatted as ExFAT (in accordance with the SD Association’s recommendation). All CF cards and lower-capacity SD cards remain FAT32. Version 1.05 also enables a Headphone Volume or Headphone Preset default option, which sets the HP encoder to operate as headphone level or to select HP presets when rotated. Pressing the headphone encoder momentarily activates the alternative function.

The Music Producers Guild Gets BPI and AIM Backing For Its Broadcast WAV Initiative

Just months after officially launching its ‘ISRC in Broadcast WAV’ initiative, the Music Producers Guild has received the support of the BPI and AIM, two trade bodies representing the music industry. Both have agreed to adopt Broadcast WAV as standard.

“We are really delighted to have the support of the BPI and AIM,” says Alchemy Mastering’s Barry Grint, who has led the MPG ISRC campaign. “This is fantastic news for all recording artists and copyright owners because adopting Broadcast WAV will make file identification and content tracking much easier and more accurate. It will also help royalty agencies develop more precise systems for payments, thereby safeguarding the incomes of artists and copyright owners when their recordings are played on air.”

With two major UK music industry organisations now firmly behind the new format – and with a number of mastering hardware equipment manufactures also on-board – the Music Producers Guild believes it is only a matter of time before Broadcast WAV is adopted by the music industry world-wide.

“WAV is the standard format for music interchange in the production process, but MPG members were frustrated that there was no method of embedding industry standard ISRC information in the format to enable more accurate identification the content of files,” Grint explains. “Working in collaboration with the European Broadcasting Union, which created a professional version of the WAV format called Broadcast WAV, we have been able to ensure the carriage of ISRC information in this type of file, thus removing the need for it to be re-entered and reducing the opportunity for error.”

The inherent good sense of using Broadcast WAV is now being recognised.

BPI Chief Executive Geoff Taylor says: “BPI is pleased to support this MPG initiative and we’ll be encouraging our members to adopt Broadcast WAV as a standard. By incorporating ISRC data into the WAV file, we can provide a more accurate and reliable means of identifying recordings when they are exchanged between labels and studios.”

James Farrelly, membership manager of AIM, adds: “In an environment where labels of all sizes now understand that effective metadata management is the key to maximising revenue from their master rights, the work MPG is doing to adapt the BWF format will result in a clearer, more accurate approach to identifying tracks and minimising potential mis-allocation of income from repertoire usage. AIM is proud to support this initiative and looks forward to working with the MPG and their partners to build industry wide adoption of the format.”

The MPG is now planning to address mastering engineers by holding a seminar to demonstrate the ease with which Broadcast WAV can be implemented. This will take place in London in early November (see www.mpg.org.uk for more details).

“For engineers using Magix/Sequioa or Merging/Pyramix, switching to Broadcast WAV will simply involve a software upgrade as both of these workstation manufacturers are already backing the Broadcast WAV initiative, ” Grint explains. “Now that this issue is higher up the priority list, we hope other manufacturers will quickly follow their lead.”

RTW Debuts New Software for TM3 TouchMonitors at IBC 2013

Moving Coil Instrument and Test Time Control Options Enhance Loudness Measurement Capabilities

AMSTERDAM, 15 SEPTEMBER, 2013 – RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters and monitoring devices for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, will display its latest innovative software options for its TM3 and TM3-3G TouchMonitors IBC 2013 (Stand 8.D92). The new TM3-SWMC software license, now shipping, incorporates a Moving Coil Emulation display, while the recent TM3 firmware update 2.50 includes the new Time Test Control option. RTW will demo a TM3 and TM3-3G equipped with both of these options at the show.

Moving Coil Emulation
The new TM3-SWMC software license expands the functionality of the TM3 TouchMonitor series with PPM, VU, loudness and a new combination of PPM and loudness moving coil instruments. The display features vertical or horizontal orientation and numeric and peak indicators with single, double and stereo channel instruments. For stereo groups in the PPM moving coil mode, additional M/S moving coil emulation is selectable.

Based on a concept developed by the BBC, the TM3-SWMC software license option implements a combined PPM and loudness sum display. On this instrument, a third cyan-colored needle depicts one of the three summed loudness values—M, S, or I—on a separate scale. It is helpful for the intuitive display of loudness to be on target with a fixed relative-loudness scale (-9 to +9 LU). The Moving Coil license option requires users to install the current firmware version 2.50 and the current Devicer DC1 version 2.50. Time Test Control
Offered as part of firmware 2.50, users can employ this sub menu to set the parameters for starting and stopping loudness measurement functions. In addition to a manual control enabled by on-screen keys and/or the GPI interface, full or semi-automatic measurements can also be defined. Therefore, the user can choose between an autostart after loading a preset or autostart when reaching the value of an adjusted gate, with or without an automatic reset of previous values. Users can terminate loudness measurements manually with on-screen keys and/or GPI commands, as well as automatically by defining a threshold value and time span. The combination of those parameters allows users to set an automatic, semi-automatic or manual loudness measurement process as required for different applications. The Test Time Control option will also be available for the TouchMonitor TM7, TMR7 and TM9 with the next firmware update.

TM3 and TM3-3G TouchMonitor
Controlled using a touch-sensitive display, the TM3 and TM3-3G both have a budget-friendly base price, a 4.3-inch touchscreen and a stylish exterior allowing for horizontal and vertical placement. They include a large number of graphical and numerical instruments showing single-channel or, in the case of the TM3-3G, any of the eight audio channels contained in a 3G-SDI stream used for metering, de-embedding and monitoring 3G-SDI audio. Both also include summing-loudness bargraphs, PPM, true peak, SPL, loudness range (LRA), dialnorm and correlation. The TM3 and TM3-3G are highly appealing compact solutions ideal for editorial offices, edit suites and small control rooms.

Both the TM3 and TM3-3G also feature PPM and true-peak instruments and offer comprehensive loudness metering in compliance with all globally relevant standards, including EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-3/1771-1, ATSC A/85 and ARIB. Finally, they also feature the Magic LRA instrument, specifically designed by RTW for intuitive visualization of the loudness range and integrated-loudness parameters.

RTW Debuts SurroundControl Series Firmware Update at IBC 2013

Latest Version Simplifies Monitoring While Working in Various Audio Formats

AMSTERDAM, 14 SEPTEMBER, 2013 – RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters and monitoring devices for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, is pleased to debut at IBC 2013 (Stand 8.D92) a firmware update for its flagship SurroundControl 31900 and 31960 series. In addition to supporting all current EBU/ITU loudness regulations, including ITU 1770-3, the new firmware simplifies the control of the studio monitoring environment when switching over between various audio formats like stereo, 3.1, 5.1 or 7.1, a common occurrence in today’s broadcast environment.

By enabling the user to select independent Trim and Delay values for both analog and digital monitoring outputs, this information can then be stored in up to five Level/Delay Trim Sets in the Audio System menu. When defining the individual input routing for the sub presets, these new Level/Delay Trim Sets can be allocated and tapped into as needed.

RTW Introduces Loudness Quality Logger Software for TM7, TMR7 and TM9 TouchMonitor Lines at IBC 2013

AMSTERDAM, 13 SEPTEMBER, 2013 – RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters and monitoring devices for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, is pleased to debut at IBC 2013 (Stand 8.D92) its LQL (Loudness Quality Logger) a new tool for logging, true-peak data analysis and reporting that is compatible with the TM7, TMR7 and TM9 TouchMonitor line of products. The LQL license (SW20014) is a natural extension of RTW’s range of innovative software options for the 7- and 9-inch line of TouchMonitor audio meters. RTW executives will be on-hand to demo and discuss this new software at the company’s IBC stand.

LQL enables data to be derived directly via an IP-connection from a capable TouchMonitor audio meter, as well as from external storage media such as a USB stick. Also included in the software are dual limit weighting, status information, marker and various other reporting features. The new PC software is free of charge to users, however the SW20014 LQL license is required to enable a TM7, TMR7 or TM9 series meter to be compatible with data export and additional display functions.

The TM7 and TM9 series TouchMonitors, which include the innovative Magic LRA instrument, feature a 7- and 9-inch touch-sensitive display, respectively, and provide unparalleled flexibility and modularity, combined with intuitive control. The software visualizes multiple sources simultaneously. Both support displaying the same signal on multiple instruments in parallel, each with dedicated defaults with both horizontal and vertical operation. TM7 visualizes up to 40 sources at the same time, while the TM9 visualizes up to 48 and the TMR7, specifically designed for radio broadcasting, visualizes up to four.

Various audio interfaces and combinations are available i.e. analog, AES3, AES3id or 3G-SDI. RTW’s entire TouchMonitor range was created to help adhere to all major industry loudness standards, including EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-3/1771-1, ATSC A/85 and ARIB.

Clear-Com Delivers Major Updates to the Eclipse HX Digital Matrix Intercom Solution at IBC 2013

Updates include the New Ethernet/IP Intelligent Trunking, Dual-Label and Arabic Language Support for V-Series Panels, IVC-32-HX Redundancy and the New Eclipse HX-Delta Frame

AMSTERDAM, SEPTEMBER 13, 2013 – Clear-Com® today announces the delivery of major enhancements to the Eclipse HX Digital Matrix Intercom System, including the first European debut of the compact 3RU Eclipse HX-Delta matrix frame, at IBC 2013 (Stand 10.D29). New capabilities of the Eclipse HX system include Ethernet/IP Intelligent Trunking with IVC-32-HX card redundancy, as well as dual-label and Arabic language support for V-Series panels. These new additions are particularly ideal for mobile production and multi-location production facilities that require agile and flexible communications solutions.

Compact, 3RU Eclipse HX-Delta System Frame
The cost-effective and compact Eclipse HX-Delta system is optimal for installation across many different production environments, from mobile broadcast trucks to smaller and multi-level studios. The Eclipse HX-Delta intercom system provides two CPU cards for redundant system control, along with the option of up to four varied I/O frame cards and up to three interface modules in a 3RU frame.

Instead of installing large system frames in just one location, the Eclipse HX-Delta gives broadcasters the option of building a distributed matrix system. This offers a more flexible workflow and permits shorter cable runs between system frames and intercom panels, cutting down on cabling costs. The size of Eclipse HX-Delta is a benefit for mobile truck installations where space is limited, but where varied and complex connectivity is required.

Similar to other Eclipse HX system frames, the Eclipse HX-Delta is also supported by the high-performance EHX Configuration Software and can be intelligently linked with Eclipse HX-PiCo, Eclipse HX-Median and Eclipse HX-Omega frames to create seamless local and/or remotely networked intercom systems.

Ethernet/IP Intelligent Trunking with IVC-32-HX Redundancy
With the application of Ethernet and IP connectivity continuing to grow in live production, Clear-Com has enhanced its 32-channel IVC-32-HX IP card to allow flexible Ethernet/IP intelligent trunking of up to 64, local and/or remote, Eclipse HX matrix frames. Following this update, a single IVC-32-HX IP card can now flexibly support both panel-to-matrix and matrix-to-matrix connectivity. From its inception, the card has been designed to provide encrypted communications over standard IP networks and its use of the established G.722 audio codec has enabled low latency voice communications without the need for dedicated infrastructure or fiber pipes. Consequently, IVC-32-HX IP has been proven to provide reliable service over LAN, WLAN and Internet infrastructure, including mobile data networks. This card has also been used in support at the world’s most prestigious sporting events.

In addition, the updated Eclipse HX offers the IVC-32-HX card redundancy feature. This new capability allocates a spare IVC-32-HX card to function as a hot redundant backup for one or more IVC-32-HX cards, which are located in the same matrix frame. On detection of a failure of the primary IVC-32-HX to communicate to its associated panels or matrices, the hot redundant backup card takes over service provision.

V-Series Panel Dual-Label and Arabic Language Support
Offering Arabic characters and dual label support on all V-Series panels is another significant enhancement to the Eclipse HX family. Previously, the V-Series panels uniquely offered 10-character and international character displays. Now, the panels can also support the Arabic language and allow operators to toggle between two predefined languages on the panel. This is most helpful in production situations where two operators with different preferred languages share use of the intercom system.
