Visual Unity Helps Clouds Media To Deliver OTT Content Service

Leading OTT solutions provider Visual Unity has helped Tanzanian media conglomerate Clouds Media to deliver a complete Over the Top content service to the East African market.

Based in Dar-es-Salaam, Clouds Media was established in 1998 as a radio and television broadcaster, delivering music, television and film content the Tanzanian market. With Visual Unity’s expertise, Clouds Media has now expanded its operations to deliver Over the Top Transmission (OTT) directly to their viewers on any screen or connected device anywhere in the world.

Visual Unity provided Clouds Media with the technology necessary to deliver its new service. The technical infrastructure is based on Visual Unity’s award-winning vuMediaTM Over the Top (OTT) content solution. vuMediaTM allows broadcasters to manage, monetize and monitor delivery of content to any connected screen and over 7000 connected devices including legacy phones.

At IBC 2013 (8:E60) DK-Technologies will unveil the DK T7 – a high precision, multi touch interface Audio and Loudness meter that gives broadcasters more integral features and functionality than any other audio meter on the market.

Competitively priced at €3495 and USD5400, the DK T7 incorporates as standard every Audio and Loudness meter function currently offered by the award winning DK Meter range. DPA Diversifies Its Highly Directional Microphone Palette

Broadcasters and film makers who are searching for a high quality boom microphone capable of capturing audio in challenging locations need to look no further than DPA Microphones’ IBC 2013 booth (8:D76).

On show for the first time at IBC is the new DPA MMC4018 – a modular supercardioid condenser capsule that is an integral part of the company’s d:dicate™ Recording Microphone range. Thanks to its directional pattern, the MMC4018 has an extremely controlled off-axis response and very uniform directional shape (independent of frequency), thus ensuring exceptionally smooth and controlled sound.

Unlike the DPA d:dicate 4017 Shotgun, which includes an interference tube and is therefore more directional at the sides, this new variant offers more consistent rear rejection making it an interesting alternative to a conventional shotgun. While the MMC4017 is exceedingly directional, especially at higher frequencies, the sleek and compact MMC4018 focuses on low noise and high sensitivity, making it more suited to long-distance voice capture.

The DPA MMC4018 is the counterpart to the MMC4018V capsule, which is used in DPA’s popular d:facto™ Vocal Microphone. This means it offers extremely good isolation and feedback rejection, making it ideally suited to applications where clarity and audio quality are critical.

Alan Dick Broadcast Spearheads Key Antenna Upgrade For Spain’s Torre de Collserola Tower

ADBL has been commissioned to replace the tower’s aging unit with its high power, multi-channel FM CPOL Spearhead Panel Antenna with an 8 around configuration to provide an extreme omni pattern

Abertis, one of the main stockholders of the Torre de Collserola, selected ADBL’s FM CPOL Spearhead Panel Antenna because it fulfilled the strict specifications and requirements imposed by the Tower to meet the demands of its customers. In addition to commissioning the system, ADBL will also conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) to ensure optimum performance upon installation.

The FM CPOL Spearhead Panel Antenna offers an extremely heavy-duty screen and dipole assembly that’s constructed of galvanized steel, assuring long trouble-free service under the toughest environmental conditions. The Spearhead Panel, with its massive crossed dipole radiating elements, was developed to meet the demanding requirements of the high power, multi-channel FM market. The panel is ideal for multi-channel operation over the complete FM band from 88 to 108 MHz. A system VSWR of 1.1:1 is achieved for each operating channel.

Torre de Collserola S.A. is a commercial company, founded in 1987, that offers infrastructure services and tower space to radio and TV frequency licensees to optimize their signal transmission. ADBL is introducing a UHF Broadband Medium Power panel antenna that is now available for Bands IV & V in all polarizations: CPOL, EPOL, HPOL and VPOL. The antenna is designed as either a side-mount or a top-mount for DTV, ISDB-T, DVB-T/H, NTSC or PAL broadcasting.

UHF Broadband Antennas
Now available for both VPOL and CPOL polarization, ADBL is launching two broadband antennas for UHF Bands IV & V, designed as low to medium power solutions, with a special focus on rooftop deployment. The antenna is a vertically or circularly polarized system enclosed by a full cylindrical radome for environmental protection and minimal urban visual impact. The antenna allows multiple UHF channels to be transmitted at the same time. Rugged marine brass and aluminum construction guarantees long life and value (ideal for DVB-T2 [ISDB-T or ATSC digital TV application] channels).

UHF Super Turnstile Antenna
The super turnstile IV/V 470 – 860 MHz Antenna has many outstanding features that bring great value to today’s broadcaster. The radome-enclosed unit can be either top or side mounted on a tower offering long life and many years of continuous service, ideal for broadband multi channel UHF applications. Minimum windloading while providing broadband response makes the super turnstile ideal for applications where either one channel is defined, or multiple channels are combined.

The JAVA broadband log periodic FM antenna system is ideal for high gain directional applications, and is available on any standard FM channel (87.5 to 107.9 MHz). Custom directional azimuth pattern and FCC Certification is available on a full-scale test range to conform to the customer’s requirements.

Sound Devices Demonstrates Latest Solutions for Production Professionals at BIRTV 2013

PIX 260i Production Video Recorder and 664 Production Mixer Bring Expanded Functionality to Broadcast and Production Professionals

BEIJING, CHINA, AUGUST 21, 2013 — Sound Devices, specialists in portable audio and video products for field production, showcases the newest functionality for the PIX 260i Production Video Recorder (China Broadcast Technologies Co., Ltd. Booth 1A112) and 664 Production Mixer (Dingrun International Digital Tec.co., Ltd Booth 2001) at the Beijing International Radio, TV & Film Equipment Exhibition 2013. BIRTV is one of the most influential exhibitions in the broadcasting industry in Asia. With recent firmware updates, PIX 260i and the 664 both offer increased functionality to the end user.

Sound Devices’ PIX 260i brings the features and tools needed by production companies and broadcasters looking to migrate to file-based recording and playback environments. It records QuickTime files in either Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD video formats. Files recorded in these intra-frame codecs are ready for editing directly from the recorder in common editing environments, such as Avid, Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere, eliminating time-consuming transferring and transcoding. For color-critical applications, the PIX 260i supports Apple ProRes 4444 through its 12-bit, 4:4:4 3G-SDI I/O. Users can also play out files from the PIX 260i for real-time applications.

Files are recorded simultaneously on up to four separate, 2.5” SSD storage devices via two front-panel PIX-CADDY slots and two rear-panel eSATAp connections. This redundancy in local, removable storage devices, coupled with standard Ethernet-based file transfer features further reduces steps in the production workflow. Recording to multiple drives offers immediate file backup, eliminating time-consuming post-record copying. Gigabit Ethernet network ports enable remote access to recorded files and the ability to transfer these files quickly into a post-production environment.

PIX 260i can also be controlled from browser-capable computers and tablets. When connected to a data network, transport and setup menu controls are available on PIXNET, which offers control of one or multiple PIX 260i recorders. Multiple units can be grouped for simultaneous control.

With version 1.03 firmware, available as a free download to existing PIX 260i users, PIX 260i provides support for the new Sound Devices PIX-CADDY CF accessory. The PIX-CADDY CF allows the PIX 260i to record polyphonic WAV files directly to removable CompactFlash cards (audio poly mode only). In addition, v1.03 enables users to record and playback Mono Audio Wave Files (audio only mode with SSD and HDD) and supports RS-422 locate to timecode, cue point commands and device type ID (Sony BVW-75 emulation). Version 1.03 also provides an added scene increment shortcut feature from the main screen and added options for displaying smaller audio meters in various parts of the main screen.

Also on-site will be the 664, Sound Devices’ flagship portable production mixer. The 664 features six ultra-low-noise, high-dynamic-range and transformer-less preamps that accept mic- or line-level signals and include analog peak limiters, high-pass filters, input trim control and direct outputs on every channel. Featuring full analog audio paths for high-performance audio and superb power efficiency, the 664 also has numerous digital capabilities. Inputs 1 and 6 can be selected as AES3 or AES42 inputs for digital microphones, each with its own SRC for simplicity in system clocking. The 664’s analog output compliment includes four output buses. The L and R buses are on balanced XLR, 10-Pin and TA-3M connectors and on unbalanced TA-3M or 3.5mm connectors. Secondary output buses X1 and X2 are available on balanced TA-3M connectors. Users can route inputs and buses to four AES3 connections for eight digital outputs on the XLR and 10-pin connectors.

Firmware version 1.05, also now available for existing customers as a free download, brings additional features to the already-powerful mixer, including greater flexibility and ease of use during outdoor production. The LCD Daylight Display Mode incorporates a daylight-specific color scheme for improved readability in sunlight. It also offers a new solid bar metering option for improved readability in direct sunlight. Sound Devices has also incorporated additional Front Panel button shortcuts, including LCD Daylight Display Mode (HP + SELECT encoders) and Phrase list (HP + RTN B/C) for fast entry of notes. Version 1.05 also incorporates the shortcut for activating the alternating Tone mode (SELECT + TONE)—if Tone Mode is set to Continuous in the menu, then (SELECT + TONE) activates L-Ident tone. Users also have a Track Names in Meters options (without color gradient/ramp) that are selectable for either right- or left-side display.

With version 1.05, 664 now offers users Monophonic Broadcast WAV file support, with the ability to record up to 10 tracks to two cards, three second pre-roll maximum. If a card not optimized for multi-channel monophonic file recording is used, or if the monophonic 10-track limit is exceeded, a warning message is displayed on the LCD when starting a recording. Polyphonic mode or reducing track count is recommended. In addition, when formatted in the 664, SD cards 64 GB and larger are now automatically formatted as ExFAT (in accordance with the SD Association’s recommendation). All CF cards and lower-capacity SD cards remain FAT32. Version 1.05 also enables a Headphone Volume or Headphone Preset default option, which sets the HP encoder to operate as headphone level or to select HP presets when rotated. Pressing the Headphone encoder momentarily activates the alternative function.

Jünger Audio Redefines Audio Processing at IBC 2013

Dynamics specialist Jünger Audio will use the IBC 2013 platform (Hall 10, Stand A49) to announce a new direction of creating solution based packages for its entire product range – one that is designed to make it much easier for customers to identify the exact processing solution they are looking for.

“As there is now a trend among some of our customers to use products like the T*AP (Television Audio Processor) for applications such as radio or PA, we decided to separate processing hardware from the feature set,” says Jünger Audio’s Managing Director Peter Pörs. “This change acknowledges the way in which many of our customers are working and allows Jünger Audio’s highly recognized functionality packages previously known as T*AP and M*AP to live on in common hardware.”

The new strategy will see Jünger Audio’s key hardware products marketed as universal processing platforms, with each one capable of handling transcoding and routing, as well as audio processing, and offering various ways of control including through automation or third party equipment. Instead of specific product names such as T*AP, M*AP and V*AP, Jünger Audio will now use these names to identify application packages. Once customers have chosen a processor with the right channel count and specified the application area they want to address (radio, TV, production, post production etc.), Jünger Audio will deliver the relevant software package with the audio processor box of choice to create a solution that exactly matches the customer’s needs.

“By using a universal processing platform, the new modularity of our product range will get as close as possible to each customer’s workflow,” Peter Pörs says. “Managing audio loudness with our renowned non-destructive Level Magic™ algorithm will be one of many features, along with 3G, HD and SD SDI embedded audio handling and high quality limiters, compressors, delays and equalisers. Pörs adds that the proliferation of distribution formats has made audio quality control during production more important than ever.

“In the past it might have been sufficient to monitor only the main mix, ignoring all transport coding and metadata implications,” he says. “But with all the simulcast formats in use today, the production team needs to simulate the home listening experience by real time metadata emulation. Adding this functionality to a hardware based monitoring controller, combined with loudness measurement and logging features, is the feature set of our QC and production monitoring solution M*AP.

Pörs adds that the company’s extensive product range will now include a plug-in version of Level Magic™ in native plugin formats (VST, RTAS, AU, AAX, Audiosuite, etc.) for MAC and PC, 32- and 64-bit systems. This will be launched at IBC 2013.

“For the first time ever it will be possible for production staff using equipment such as Pro Tools to control audio loudness using our Level Magic™ algorithm,” he says. The addition of a plug-in to our range means that, from production right though to transmission, broadcasters can use Level Magic™ processing throughout their entire production and broadcasting chain.”

Sound Devices Demonstrates 788T with Latest Firmware and Production Capabilities at SMPTE Australia 2013

SYDNEY, JULY 22, 2013 — Sound Devices, specialists in portable audio and video products for field production, will be on-site at The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers biennial conference and exhibition, SMPTE13, demonstrating its latest solutions for content creators in the motion-imaging, sound and broadcast industries (John Barry Sales, Stand C29). The company will exhibit its flagship 788T and 788T-SSD digital audio recorders with the latest firmware update, Version 3.0.

With the influx of multi-tracking in the field and on set, the 788T has become the next-generation digital audio recorder for advanced sound mixers who require additional isolated tracks. It boasts eight full-featured inputs and records to up to 12 tracks. It accepts either microphone or line-level signals, provides 48-V phantom power for condenser microphones, offers peak limiters for microphone inputs and features fully adjustable high-pass filters—all in a compact package. Routing flexibility allows each input to be routed to left/right mixed tracks, isolated tracks or aux tracks.

Further positioning the 788T as one of the foremost solutions for today’s evolving production standards, Version 3.0 is a free download for all existing and new 788T users offering a 192-kHz sampling rate for up to four tracks (L through B) recording to one drive. It provides for scene, take, notes, false takes, circle and track name metadata to be synched between C-Linked 788Ts. Version 3 firmware also features digital input limiters for AES3 and AES42 inputs, perfect for digital microphones. Additional enhancements include a left/right tone identification mode with a shortcut to toggle the mode on or off, added user-customizable CL-9 encoder adjustments, which affect trim gain and EQ frequency, and the option to decode MS into LR MIX only and leave ISO tracks as un-decoded MS.

In addition, Version 3.0 offers a new timecode mode, “Free Run – Auto Output Mute.” This is the same as the “Free” run mode, but mutes the “Lemo” timecode output when stopped and can be used to roll external devices when the “Rec-Run” timecode is not suitable. In addition to overall faster drive formatting, the latest firmware features an upgraded external low-voltage threshold, now 11.3V, along with various overall system improvements and optimizations.

The active booms come in several lengths and configurations with flexible gooseneck and XLR termination. The new active cable only adds a centimeter to the capsule, making it even more discreer than the compact C preamp, but giving comparable performance.
