Harris Boosts Flexiva Transmitter Range, Demonstrates Power Efficiency at NAB

At the 2012 NAB Show, Harris Broadcast Communications will demonstrate how radio broadcasters can maximize transmission efficiency across all power levels — most notably for high-power HD Radio™, FM and AM broadcast operations.

Last year, Harris introduced its Flexiva™ range of quad-mode, solid-state transmitters in low-to-mid power models, boasting a single, highly power-efficient platform to support analog and global digital standards. This year, the company will introduce two new high-power models (30kW and 40kW) for broadcasters that need to minimize operating costs while covering large areas — including analog FM and high-power HD Radio via elevated sideband levels.

The Flexiva exciter will also debut at the 2012 NAB Show, featuring rock-solid digital, direct-to-channel modulation for maximum on-air stability. Web-based monitoring and control, a host of expansion options and upgrade paths to HD Radio and DRM+ make the Flexiva exciter a feature-rich yet simple and cost-effective alternative to the Harris FlexStar® HDx exciter. Both exciters are well-suited for Flexiva transmitters at any power level.

Harris will also demonstrate its high-power 3DX Destiny® AM transmitter range for Modulation Dependent Carrier Level (MDCL) applications, delivering exceptional power efficiency to high-power AM broadcasters via Harris Adaptive Carrier Control Plus (ACC+) systems. Harris ACC+ systems help AM broadcasters reduce average power consumption by approximately 35 percent — sharply reducing operating costs associated with high-power AM broadcasting.

All Harris Flexiva and 3DX transmitters leverage Harris® PowerSmart® technology to increase power density, reduce footprint, and improve reliability through simpler designs and better operational efficiency.

“Radio broadcasters continue to seek greater operational efficiency through compact and modular transmitter designs,” said Richard Redmond, vice president of product strategy and management for transmission systems, Harris Broadcast Communications. “Harris continues to develop new strategies and technologies that give our customers great performance with lower operating costs.”

Harris will also show its latest generation FlexStar importer and exporter models (HDI200 and HDE200) for more efficient management of HD Radio multicast signals comprising main and supplemental program audio channels. The NAB 2012 Show also marks the first spring show demonstration of IP backhaul capabilities within the Harris Intraplex® HD Link™ fixed microwave STL system. This upgrade enables tighter integration of RF and IP capabilities for single-channel or multicast program transport.

Middle Atlantic and Extron Electronics Initiate New Half Rack Standard for AV Integration

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 2, 2012––Middle Atlantic Products, in conjunction with Extron Electronics, is initiating and supporting the establishment of a new standard for half-width rack systems for AV integration.

Working in cooperation with the Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA), Extron and Middle Atlantic are seeking to establish and maintain a specific ECIA standard for what has typically been offered as a custom rack offering until now. To further strengthen the quality and application of the standard, the two companies are inviting manufacturers of compact-format devices to join a communication and working group for this effort.

Both manufacturers have recently developed product families – the Extron Half Rack Shelf System and Middle Atlantic’s new HR Series Half Racks – which, respectively, fit within and incorporate the proposed 10 5/8” overall width defined in the proposed new standard.

Commenting on the introduction and standard effort, Middle Atlantic Director of Marketing Kevin Handerson stated, “We are pleased to be working with device manufacturing partners to seize the initiative for establishing an ECIA standard for AV half rack systems. Having a workable, clear standard will greatly facilitate the installation of half rack products in useful applications.”

Dave Pincek, Vice President of Product Development for Extron Electronics, stated “Extron has long advocated the use of standard, rack-mount enclosure dimensions as a means of improving AV system designs and integration. With this proposed new standard for a compact mounting system, key AV equipment can now be more easily integrated into lecterns, columns, table legs, and similar spaces without sacrificing system functionality, thermal management, or room aesthetics.”

Device manufacturers that would like to participate in the working group should contact Mark Tracy, Director of Product and Business Development at Middle Atlantic Products, using the email address Standards@MiddleAtlantic.com.

Aerosmith and Producer Jack Douglas Use Endless Analog’s CLASP™ on Sessions for Upcoming Album

— Aerosmith’s new album, the first in eight years, will feature a rich analog sound made possible with the use of CLASP™ (Closed Loop Analog Signal Processor) —

NASHVILLE, TN, October 6, 2011 — Excitement among fans is electric at the news that Aerosmith is hard at work on their 14th studio album, set to be released in May 2012. It is a testament to the band’s legacy as one of the greatest bands in the world that each new Aerosmith album release is still such a huge event. Fans have been clamoring for a new set of material since 2001’s Just Push Play and 2004’s bluesy covers album Honkin’ on Bobo, and the sessions for the new record are rendering something very special – something that producer Jack Douglas is calling “raw” and “nasty.” Aerosmith’s decision to again collaborate with Douglas, who helmed sessions for the band’s classic 1970s LP’s Get Your Wings, Toys in the Attic and Rocks, indicates that the band is trying to capture an old-school, classic vibe on the new set. Helping Douglas, engineer Warren Huart and the band achieve the right sound is Endless Analog ’s CLASP™ (Closed Loop Analog Signal Processor) system, which uniquely integrates analog tape into the digital audio workstation environment. Together, they have all become huge CLASP devotees, and in fact they are using four CLASP units on the sessions. more

Metropolis Group Adds Oxford Limiters & EQS to all 10 Suites

miles-showell-metropolis.jpgOXFORD, UK: Europe’s largest independent mastering facility, The Metropolis Group, has purchased a significant package of 10 Sonnox Oxford Limiters and 10 Oxford EQs. Sonnox Sales & Marketing Manager Nathan Eames reports, the substantial plug-in acquisition was vetted by Metropolis Group Technology Development Manager, Crispin Murray. “We test drove a good number of plug-ins, and Sonnox were the ones that everyone seemed to come back to,” Murray said. “Because they were the most transparent of all we tried, they are now installed in all ten of our mastering suites.”

Mastering engineer Miles Showell comments, “Transparency is particularly important with loudness. I don’t think we’re mastering any louder than we used to. We won’t go down the ‘level at all costs’ route, but you do need to compete. If your stuff isn’t loud enough, clients will just go elsewhere. It’s better that we do it as cleanly as possible, rather than just smash the hell out of something, to get it loud. The Oxford Limiter is the cleanest one we have. I use it on probably 85% of my work and have come up with a setting with a slight tape compression feel to it, which makes things sound really nice. more
