The new StreamGuys/Orban solution allows broadcasters to use the entire turnkey package, or choose the elements they need today with options to scale moving forward. The overall solution emphasizes reliable content delivery and business growth regardless of how many services a particular broadcast requires — ensuring that independent radio stations and large network operators receive equal attention while establishing and growing an online identity.

“Broadcasters need to provide online and mobile audiences with a high-quality user experience while generating new revenue streams and controlling costs,” said Kiriki Delany, president, StreamGuys. “StreamGuys and Orban are combining historical strengths to ensure a robust and revenue-generating streaming service customized to each broadcaster’s requirements.”

The complete collection of services address the entire content lifecycle, including front-end processing and multiplatform content delivery to ensure quality of service; as well as business software and playout tools to build audiences and drive revenue opportunities.

Process: Orban’s highly efficient audio processing products prepare broadcast signals for multi-platform delivery, retaining optimal signal integrity while encoding metadata-rich streams into multiple formats – making an exceptional user experience possible across any consumer device.
Deliver: StreamGuys’ cloud-based streaming architecture reliably streams live and on-demand content to the web, mobile and in-car devices, internet radios and OTT media players.
Monetize: Dynamic, server-side ad insertion technologies help broadcasters reliably target audiences without complex integrations, while subscription services from StreamGuys enable broadcasters to generate revenue through special content — with rock-solid conditional access protection.
Play: The latest HTML5 and Flash player options ensure audiences can tune in from anywhere — including tablets and smartphones — while rich mobile apps drive deeper engagement with listeners.

The complete solution also ensures compatibility with industry-leading automation systems to enhance content management and reporting across multiple streams. Additionally, the solution incorporates a variety of reporting and analytics tools to help broadcasters understand global audiences, research trends and pinpoint potential growth opportunities.

“Collectively, the Orban and StreamGuys turnkey streaming service brings world-class broadcast technology into the streaming media universe, ensuring that broadcasters achieve the same premium quality and business opportunities they do with their over-the-air services,” said C. Jayson Brentlinger, president and CEO, Orban.

Barix Targets Private Radio Networks and Content Providers at 2014 NAB Show

New in-store radio solutions cover the spectrum for live retail radio, scheduled program playback

ZURICH/ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, March 25, 2014
Barix comes to the 2014 NAB Show with a new strategy to create more efficient operations for private radio networks and content providers: fewer separate pieces, and more complete solutions.

At its NAB booth (Las Vegas Convention Center, April 7-10, Booth C1139), Barix will unveil two new complete solutions for in-store radio deployments that eliminate the device-centric philosophy of its previous-generation solutions, while delivering new operational efficiencies and revenue generating opportunities:
• Store & Play, a complete hardware and software solution for scheduled playout of music and advertising with automatic content updates
SoundScape, a complete live streaming and stored playback solution that enables simple, centralized management across large networks via a portal to control users, content, scheduling and monitoring

Store & Play
The next-generation Barix Store and Play solution receives its debut at the 2014 NAB Show. Store & Play gives private radio networks a flexible application for retailers and other businesses that want dynamic in-store radio programming without using too many network resources. While live streaming audio typically doesn’t require a large amount of network space, many businesses have limited network bandwidth to begin with – or otherwise want more control over what they are playing at what time.

Like previous generations, the new Barix Store & Play allows customers to download music and advertising content off the network, and reliably play out that programming on schedule with excellent audio quality. Unlike previous generations, the new Store & Play is a complete hardware and software solution as opposed to a device-centric system. Overall, the new Store & Play delivers much download speeds approaching 100 times faster, as well as improved system memory to preserve quality of playback through demanding processing actions. Additionally, a built-in MicroSD card eliminates theft of monetized content, while built-in precision clock timing ensures that playback schedules remain intact in the event of network outages. Overall, the new Store & Play solution vastly increases flexibility for content providers with a need for scheduled playback of in-store content.

SoundScape
SoundScape, unveiled in February, allows private radio networks to comprehensively manage audio distribution over IP networks, offering a centralized management portal and audio players at multiple locations. Users can manage, configure and group SoundScape audio players, schedule content and monitor device status network-wide.

SoundScape adds in-store radio flexibility through support of live streams and stored content playback over the same network, with seamless switching between the two applications. Both options support targeted, location-based advertising insertions that seamlessly fade in and out of music programs.

The network-wide management capabilities of SoundScape further reduces costs and complexity by enabling private radio networks to remotely deliver firmware updates, create and monitor logs, and track play reports for sponsors. This takes the onus off private radio networks who previously used in-house or third-party monitoring solutions to perform such services.

SoundScape additionally provides value through an ability to target content across the network. The end-to-end architecture ensures that businesses can group devices to receive specific ads, other languages or completely different programs – whether by location, by department or otherwise.

“Businesses of all kinds, including many private radio networks, have long used Barix in-store radio solutions to deliver live streams and file-based playlists to stores and locations,” said Ronni Guggenheim, CEO, Barix. “SoundScape and Store & Play retain the core Barix competency of efficiently and reliably moving audio across IP networks with outstanding audio quality, while introducing new features that will ultimately enable private radio networks and content providers to help their customers create better brand awareness and improve in-store experiences – with added flexibility and cost-efficiency.”

Whisperings Solo Piano Radio First to Deploy New StreamGuys Interactive HTML5 Multimedia Player

StreamGuys’ unique player design gives “free stream” listeners a richer broadcast experience

BAYSIDE, CALIFORNIA, January 13, 2014StreamGuys announces that Whisperings Solo Piano Radio is its first customer to deploy the company’s new interactive HTML5 player. The player gives mobile listeners without a Flash player a simple way to access the free Whisperings stream, while also delivering a much richer broadcast experience through integrated metadata support.

The integrated metadata gives free stream listeners a synchronized stream with high-quality music and visual information including artist names, song titles and album titles — as well as live links to purchase music through artist sites. Site owner and independent musician David Nevue notes that this richer experience, along with simpler playback on mobile devices, is important to attracting new listeners and retaining audiences in an increasingly crowded and fragmented marketplace.

“Whisperings launched at a time when there was no other online listening option for solo piano music,” said Nevue, himself a solo pianist and composer. “There are many more options today and it is important that new listeners are greeted with a live stream rather than a message to download an app or a plug-in. The HTML5 player works across all devices so visitors don’t have to work to access our stream, while also offering a modern Pandora or iTunes Radio-like experience with artwork, details and buy links.”

Nevue also sees this enhanced experience as an opportunity to interest more listeners in Whisperings PureStream, his commercial-free subscription service that offers an expanded artist roster, customizable playlists and more. Whisperings has long used StreamGuys’ RevenueStream software platform for secure, password-protected subscription controls and conditional access that ensures only subscribers can access the stream. His long-term satisfaction with StreamGuys for content delivery and stream protection played a significant role in his decision to integrate the new HTML5 player.

“I have always thought of StreamGuys as more of a partner than just another company I work with. They provide outstanding customer service and a willingness to find solutions to obstacles,” he said. “StreamGuys has also offered flexible, affordable services to meet my changing bandwidth needs over the years, and they have been receptive and responsive to my requests regarding capabilities of the HTML5 player. They have delivered a multiformat streaming solution with this player that also offers new ways to explore revenue generation for the free stream.”

Nevue’s above reference is to live dynamic advertising insertion, which StreamGuys supports within its HTML5 player via pre-rolls, mid-rolls and post-rolls. He also expects to use the player as an alternative choice for his ad-free PureStream service at a later date.

StreamGuys launched its HTML5 player last month as part of its strategy to ensure that broadcasters, audio publishers and service providers can reach consumers across many fixed and mobile devices. The company is in the process of rolling out its HTML5 player for other customers in the US and abroad.

New StreamGuys Interactive HTML5 Multimedia Player Breaks Compatibility Barriers

Unique player design solves metadata challenges, simplifies multiscreen advertising for broadcasters, audio publishers across multiple devices

BAYSIDE, CALIFORNIA, November 21, 2013StreamGuys announces the launch of its HTML5 player to help broadcasters and streaming services retain and increase audiences with a multiplatform approach, ensuring one player can accommodate revenue-supported live streams on iOS, Android and other mobile and desktop devices.

StreamGuys’ new interactive player supports all popular mobile devices in alignment with the HTML5 markup language, which is quickly becoming the streaming platform of choice among broadcasters, publishers and advertisers who favor its multi-device support.

StreamGuys differentiates its HTML5 player by providing integrated metadata support, which seamlessly synchronizes live audio streams with relevant data of interest to consumers. This gives broadcasters and audio publishers a unique opportunity to offer audiences a full featured, interactive HTML5 player that works on every device. Radio stations, musical artists and other service providers can now easily, and dynamically, display artist and song title information, Amazon live links, social network connections and more alongside audio streams.

“There is no HTML5 standard for extracting the song title and artist name from a media stream and displaying it within a web page, which creates integration headaches for service providers and a less satisfying consumer experience,” said Dean Mitchell, lead developer, StreamGuys. “StreamGuys solves this problem by integrating a robust, server-side metadata parser with a flexible HTML5 media player. Broadcasters can now offer their audience a feature-rich, revenue-supported media player that has a consistent user experience across all devices.”

The launch also comes at a time when broadcasters and streaming services are exploring ad insertion technologies for multiscreen advertising. StreamGuys supports live ad insertion within its new player, using dynamic advertising technologies to trigger pre-rolls, mid-rolls and post-rolls. Similar to its metadata application, the HTML5 player automatically coordinates player content with the ad server to trigger the right advertisements for the right audiences at the right times.

Mitchell adds that StreamGuys will extend its HTML5 player functionality to other multimedia streaming services in future versions.

Barix IP Audio Solutions Help Soma FM Grow Radio Footprint

Multichannel internet broadcaster specifies Barix Exstreamer 500 devices for reliable, cost-efficient and high-quality HD2 broadcasts at radio stations nationwide

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, November 21, 2013
— IP audio and control specialist Barix is helping multichannel internet radio broadcaster Soma FM grow its presence in the over-the-air broadcast space, with Soma FM specifying reliable, affordable Barix IP Audio solutions for radio stations receiving its programs.

Soma FM is a multichannel internet radio broadcaster offering 27 channels of indie-leaning programs exploring rock, electronic and other music formats. The listener-supported, commercial-free service streams its programs on its website and via a Roku streaming app in addition to supporting over-the-air HD Radio side channels, otherwise known as HD2 feeds.

Soma FM owner and president Rusty Hodge says that Barix helps to minimize costs for his over-the-air radio clients, which include KPBS-FM in San Diego, while providing radio stations with reliable, high-quality audio streams.

“The only other solution we considered for signal decoding and playout were desktop-class machines with professional grade audio cards, and these were three times the cost of Barix,” said Hodge. “Barix eliminates the need to worry about problems like software upgrades and security issues. They are compact, and don’t consume much power. Foremost, they are extremely reliable.”

The last point is the most tangible benefit for Hodge, as he also employs Barix Instreamer audio encoders for remote broadcasts. One recent remote project focused on encoding live broadcast feeds from the Kennedy Space Center to cover space shuttle launches. Soma FM also recently produced live broadcasts from the DEFCON hacker conference in Las Vegas.

Additionally, Soma FM encodes police scanner feeds to enhance certain electronic music programs heard on its website. “Think of it as using Barix as a mixer,” said Hodge. “We connect the scanner to the Instreamer, which injects a priority stream over the music feed. It allows us to do something that you often hear in live or recorded electronic music but is unique for radio broadcasting.”

Hodge also acts as a consultant for large commercial radio networks, and he often specifies Barix solutions for these stations based on his experience. He especially likes the Exstreamer 500, which offers broadcast-quality inputs and outputs among other professional features. Reliability aside, Hodge points out that Barix produces excellent audio quality, with flexible format and bitrate options to meet various network and bandwidth requirements.

“We rely on Barix solutions to feed the broadcasters, as they typically don’t want super hi-fi feeds due to network congestion issues,” said Hodge. “They simply plug in the devices at the stations and get great sounding broadcast audio. And to date we have never had to reboot or power cycle one of their devices.”

StreamGuys Powers In-Store Broadcasts for Custom Channels

Cloud-based streaming architecture supports custom music services with dynamic ad insertions for businesses

BAYSIDE, CALIFORNIA, October 15, 2013 — Internet music service Custom Channels is helping retail businesses like Whole Foods Market transform in-store environments with broadcast-quality audio programs, mixing music and dynamic advertising that deliver a branded, radio-like experience. The company is relying on robust, cloud-based streaming services from StreamGuys to support its customers.

Custom Channels brings a rare broadcast perspective to the growing business of in-store audio streaming. Its principal partners, including President/Co-Founder Dave Rahn, launched Custom Channels following years of experience working at and consulting for radio stations. Today, Rahn and his team leverage their professional production skills and broadcast programming knowledge to build custom in-store programs for retailers like Whole Foods Market, for which they support two-thirds of their stores.

The company recently switched to StreamGuys for content delivery support, recognizing its broadcast expertise as well as its shared spirit of customization to meet client needs.

“We have always used an outside CDN because the specialized technical knowledge required to maintain servers, bandwidth and overall infrastructure is frankly beyond our area of expertise,” said Rahn. “The difference with StreamGuys is that they are not forcing us into one business model for streaming services. They instead provide us with the streaming services that are right for our model, and deliver the ongoing recommendations, support and troubleshooting we need. That helps us keep costs low and leaves us to focus on program content and customer relationships — which is what we do best.”

Custom Channels takes program content beyond music by incorporating dynamic ad insertions in the form of “mid-rolls,” which Rahn cites as a particularly strong tool to trigger ads and promos for in-store streaming models. StreamGuys incorporates third-party ad insertion software into its streaming architecture, targeting broadcasters and IP-based music services that wish to incorporate promotional content in the form of pre-rolls, mid-rolls and post-rolls — and potentially generate new revenue streams.

“The ad insertion software in the StreamGuys architecture allows us to manage content at the server side as opposed to just pushing messages to individual players and boxes,” said Rahn. “For example, we work with a large chain of dental offices, Comfort Dental, with offices all over the country. The mid-roll insertions allow us to take a single Comfort Dental radio channel and insert specialized ads for each region, or even down to the local office level. The messages don’t have to live in the origin stream; instead, we create a place in the stream and insert them on a very targeted basis. It’s a very efficient model, and makes for good use of IP delivery.”

Rahn’s broadcast experience also means a focus on audio quality. Custom Channels currently delivers most audio content using the aacPlus codec at bitrates ranging from 64 to 96 kb/s, and uses other high-quality codecs like Ogg Vorbis for specialty services such as ReMix, which allows customers to create their own custom mixes. Rahn will explore Ogg Opus moving forward, the new versatile, open-source audio codec for low-latency, high-quality audio streaming. StreamGuys is the first CDN to announce support for Ogg Opus audio streaming.

“We’re dealing with businesses, and we try to keep as light of a footprint as possible since there are other demands on their bandwidth and technical infrastructures,” said Rahn. “StreamGuys allows us to use various high-quality, bandwidth-friendly formats so we are comparable to FM quality and usually higher than satellite quality — a sweet spot that our clients can easily handle on their networks.”

Rahn also points to several restaurant brands as Custom Channels clients, including the 200-plus Which Wich sandwich shop chain; and the fast casual Mod Pizza chain based in the Seattle region. Another interesting client is Floyd’s Barbershop, which operates more than 70 barbershops around the country. Custom Channels produces a true “retail radio” station in this case, with full-blown professional production, deejays and live requests.

“We focus on music-conscious brands that essentially want custom radio stations, and many of these clients also stream their channels on their websites,” said Rahn. “Ultimately, StreamGuys offers an ideal service for in-store delivery, whether it’s conventional streaming of a radio station or a business that wants something a little more unique.”

More information on Custom Channels can be found at http://www.customchannels.net.

Media Group International Installs VidiGo’s Visual Radio Solution at Clouds FM

Leading Media Systems Integrator Media Group International has assisted Tanzania’s Clouds FM radio station to give its audience a totally new, interactive experience by installing VidiGo Visual Radio software. The new software will go live on air at Clouds FM within the next few weeks.

The Clouds FM project is the first major radio installation MGI and VidiGo have completed in Africa since meeting at CABSAT 2012 and subsequently forging a partnership. The two companies are now working together to give MGI’s television and radio customers much greater access to VidiGo’s revolutionary range of broadcast software products.
VidiGo Visual Radio was the ideal solution for Clouds FM, one of four stations operated by Tanzania’s Clouds Media Group. Affectionately referred to as The People’s Station, Clouds FM is annually rated the number one station in Tanzania for the youth segment.

MGI’s Sales Director Paul Wallis, who brokered the Clouds FM deal in conjunction with Sales Assistant Diana Velikova, says: “Thanks to its strong reputation for delivering trendsetting programming, dynamic presenters and innovative promotions, Clouds FM is widely regarded as the ‘coolest’ radio station in Tanzania by the country’s 18 to 35 year olds. Given this demographic, the station wanted to incorporate interactive graphics that could be overlaid onto the video feed of its radio broadcasts and used to enhance its internet presence and Twitter, RSS and social media feeds. Diana and I felt that VidiGo Visual Radio was ideal for Clouds FM because it will be able to deliver all the elements station staff need in a very simple to use and intuitive package.”

VidiGo Virtual Radio combines the strength of VidiGo Live and VidiGo Audio Director. VidiGo Live is a full blown software solution for multi-camera TV production. The VidiGo Audio Director is an intelligent extension to VidiGo Live that makes automatic decisions by analyzing audio signals with its advanced algorithms, allowing it to make decisions like a real television director. Finally, the graphics and text overlays are automatically inserted within VidiGo Live, which makes it possible to superimpose content in a live situation using a station’s own designed Flash application.

Joseph Cusago, Managing Director, Clouds Media Group, says: “We are really thrilled with the workflow VidiGo Virtual Radio has provided and our audiences will love the fact that we will soon offer an interactive visual radio experience via the internet and social media feeds. The system is incredibly easy to operate and, because the cameras are switched automatically on the basis of which microphone input is being used, there is very little for our presenters to do. This means they can concentrate on the job of presenting, leaving VidiGo’s clever software to take care of everything else.”

VidiGo CCO Reinout Lempers adds: “With VidiGo’s background in radio, we understand the culture and needs of a radio station. We knew from the start that we shouldn’t bother radio presenters with creating video. That’s why we developed an automated software workflow that is fully compatible with existing radio workflows. With our solution presenters to do what they are good at, which is making radio, while VidiGo’s automated workflow creates an entire TV show, just like a real director would.”

Vietnam Television Calls on Jampro Again for VHF and UHF Antennas

Sacramento, CA — Jampro Antennas of Sacramento, California has been awarded another contract by Vietnam Television (VTV) to supply two high-power broadband antennas, one for VHF Band III transmission, the other for UHF. Both antennas will provide coverage of CanTho, the fifth largest city in Vietnam, and the largest city in the Mekong delta.

“This follows a major 2011 order for ten Jampro DVB-T (Digital TV) antenna systems that were installed at sites located throughout the Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” said Alex M. Perchevitch, Jampro president. “For many years, we supplied Voice of Vietnam (VOV), the founder of VTV, with radio broadcast antennas. That excellent relationship and the proven field performance of our equipment led to this latest award.”

The JHD-HV4 is a half wave spaced, horizontally polarized flat panel, dual-dipole high-band VHF antenna that can broadcast on Band III at 174 to 230 MHz. Rugged galvanized steel construction ensures many years of dependable performance. The JHD antenna has been proven to have excellent bandwidth and VSWR. It’s ideal for VTV’s broadband/multi-channel op¬erations. Many standard and custom directional patterns are available to fit VTV’s coverage requirements.

The JUHD UHF antenna was selected by VTV for two primary reasons. Due to a modular design, it gives VTV flexibility to configure various elevation patterns so coverage can be customized to suit the topographical challenges of Vietnam which range from flat deltas to mountainous areas exceeding 3,000 meters. VTV engineers worked with Jampro’s technical staff to customize patterns to optimize coverage for the sites.

Secondly, the JUHD antenna’s robust stainless steel construction has proven reliable in hot, wet tropical climates. Fiberglass radomes provide additional panel protection.

Jampro is also providing its own manufactured Proline brand of rigid transmission line for both installations and related RF components.

Vietnam Television, or VTV, is the national television broadcaster for Vietnam. Each major city and most of the 64 provinces have their own TV stations. VTV broadcasts several terrestrial cable, satellite and regional channels, plus an international channel.
