Aphex®’s New Audio Xciter™ Music App Now Available: Hear Your Music the Way It Was Meant to Sound

— Pro audio technology innovator Aphex releases the Audio Xciter™ music player app, providing unprecedented sound quality on mobile devices through its proprietary Xciter digital signal processor (DSP), previously available only in pro audio equipment —

BURBANK, CA, July 10, 2012 — Aphex®, a leader in audio enhancement technology for more than 35 years, is proud to announce the availability of Audio Xciter™, the first audio app that dynamically improves the quality of digital music (as well as audiobooks and podcasts) on your Apple iOS devices through a proprietary Xciter digital signal processor (DSP). It has been the career-long dream of Aphex Chairman & CEO David Wiener to help musicians and music lovers make the most of every music experience, and Audio Xciter is a great testament of Wiener’s drive to end the debate about poor audio quality in digital devices. Audio Xciter uses patented Aphex DSP technology to improve the quality of your music by analyzing and enhancing the audio signal in real time. The iOS app is available today with an Android version to follow next month.

Legendary musicians such as Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and Led Zeppelin have relied on the Aphex technology behind Audio Xciter for years and used to rent Aphex products for thousands of dollars for audio mastering. Now music lovers can experience the original sound quality created in-studio through the Audio Xciter app (available as a free demo download).

“Heavily compressed digital music files reduce sonic performance in music recordings,” said David Wiener. “We’ve leveraged our professional studio technology and created Audio Xciter to restore the detail, richness and spaciousness to your audio experience. The result is a more immersive sound that more accurately reflects the original intentions of the artists, engineers and producers. All the musicians and producers we work with think this is a revolutionary product for mobile music.”

“The Audio Xciter app brings musical detail to life, no matter what style of music you’re listening to. You will hear increased clarity, along with space and detail, that will impress anyone,” said Alan Parsons, GRAMMY® Award-winning record producer and engineer.

The free Audio Xciter app allows 15 minutes of enhanced playback per day. Users have two upgrade options: Audio Xciter Basic removes the time restriction and Audio Xciter Studio allows users to fine-tune the Xciter DSP settings for a truly custom experience. The launch pricing is $2.99 for Audio Xciter ($4.99 after July 31st) and $7.99 for Audio Xciter Studio ($9.99 after July 31st). Audio Xciter can be purchased through iTunes for iOS and will soon be available at the Android Store and Amazon.com for Android devices. The app is available at http://bit.ly/AudioXciter-for-iOS.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Audio Xciter will go to Respect the Music, Aphex’s foundation supporting music and arts education.

Additional information including demo videos and screenshots are available at http://AudioXciterApp.com.

AES Expands To China

New Beijing Section Exemplifies International Growth

BEIJING: AES Regions & Sections Chair, Peter Cook, has concluded a series of meetings in Beijing, which have resulted in the formation of the first Audio Engineering Society Section in mainland China.

Early this year, Shusen Wang, a long-time AES member, VP of a Beijing broadcasting company, and a leading professional audio consultant there, contacted Mr. Cook to explore the possibility of establishing a Beijing Section. In late May, Cook made two AES presentations to members of the China Audio and Video Association (CAVA). Following those meetings a group of over 25 Chinese AES members from Beijing and other cities, discussed a Beijing Section with Cook. Mr. Wang was unanimously invited to Chair the Section.

“The seriousness and passion demonstrated by the AES members I met with in Beijing was deeply impressive,” Peter Cook reveals. “They are fully committed to all the fundamental elements that make the AES an invaluable forum for professional audio. They enthusiastically recommended highly qualified local vice-chairs to be responsible for: Education, Research, Broadcast Applications and other areas of universal AES concern.” Cook adds, “I was genuinely taken aback when they conveyed the huge size of China’s professional audio community. This initial Beijing Section may mark the beginning of a substantial AES expansion in China. Their concerns for the importance of an AES affiliation were humbling.”

Shusen Wang applauds Cook’s recommendations, and has already begun to map out a program to incorporate them. “We will work closely with the AES parent organization to introduce Chinese experts to relevant Technical Committees; to invite them to submit research papers; to introduce Chinese stake-holders to Standards Committee chairs; and, do everything possible to ensure the success of first-time Chinese exhibitors at AES Conventions,” Mr. Wang said.

“The AES has many individual members in China. We believe our new Beijing Section will sustain a long and mutually beneficial on-going relationship with China’s professional audio community,” concludes AES executive director Bob Moses. “This move exemplifies our plan to expand the AES mission and support our ongoing effectiveness throughout Asia and The Far East.”

The Audio Engineering Society was formed in 1948 by a group of concerned audio engineers. The AES counts over 14,000 members throughout the U.S., Latin America, Europe, Japan and the Far East. The organization serves as the pivotal force in the exchange and dissemination of technical information for the industry. For additional information visit http://www.aes.org

Myers Installs 50th ProTrack MAM System at KOCE-TV

STATION PROVIDES PBS TO THE GREATER LOS ANGELES MARKET

Northampton, MA – Myers Information Systems – a long-standing developer of broadcast traffic, business, and content management software – today announced the successful commissioning of a milestone 50th Media Asset Management (MAM) module for the Company’s flagship ProTrack TV at Southern California’s KOCE-TV. The station – branded as “PBS SoCaL” – offers a full schedule of PBS and local interest programming to viewers in the Greater Los Angeles area.

“Myers was an easy choice: it saves us money and maintenance time, plus it integrates well within our highly automated master control infrastructure,” said director of engineering & technology Gordon Smith. “ProTrack MAM is easy-to-expand and uses standard, rather than proprietary archive file structures; it’s an integral part of Myers’ traffic environment and it ‘plays well’ with our Avid Automation, plus it costs us just a third of the previous system’s license and support fees.”

“We’re extremely pleased at how rapidly our MAM solution’s been adopted, as evidenced by this 50th installation,” said Crist Myers, company CEO and president. “Adding MAM to their existing ProTrack configuration helped KOCE tackle the challenges of becoming Los Angeles’s primary PBS station last year; it lets them repurpose content and automate file-based transfers between archive and playout servers based on the actual ProTrack schedule.” The solution provides real-time insight to scheduling, noting whether content is in-house, within rights to be aired, and compliant with predefined business rules; it helps clear the on-air server with purge orders after confirming a copy is securely in archive. “And ProTrack MAM works equally well with existing middleware solutions or as a standalone within a spinning disk environment,” added Myers.

Myers’ highly regarded flagship suite, ProTrack, is available in both radio and television editions. It offers comprehensive scheduling and business management for individual, multichannel and multi-station facilities. Actively used by more than 226 media outlets, supporting more than 1,300 channels, ProTrack provides a high-level of structure and scalability, without sacrificing flexibility, for today’s rapidly evolving media environments.

Prism Sound Delivers Simpler Audio Measurement Solutions To All India Radio

All India Radio (AIR) has taken delivery of 35 Prism Sound dScope Series III audio test instruments, which are being used to check the audio quality of AIR’s transmitter links throughout the country.

With a national network of 237 broadcasting centres, AIR is one of the most influential radio broadcasters in India. Established in 1936 as a Government organisation with a remit to inform, educate and entertain, AIR underwent rapid expansion after India attained independence in 1947 and now reaches 99.18% of the population. Its home service broadcasts in 24 languages and 146 dialects, while its external service covers 27 languages – 17 national and 10 foreign.

Today, the broadcaster has 149 medium frequency and 54 high frequency transmitters, along with 177 FM transmitters. This extensive network is constantly checked to ensure audio quality and overall performance.

In order to win this important tender, Prism Sound worked closely with New Delhi-based Electro Dynamics, the company’s specialist agent for Government sector Test and Measurement business in India. Formerly an Audio Precision representative, Electro Dynamics has been supplying equipment to AIR and Doordarshan (TV) for many years.

Lalit Agarwal, founder and CEO of Electro Dynamics, says: “Alongside offering the most competitive financial package in its tender response, Prism Sound also offered the best technical solution. The dScope Series III instrument was deemed highly suitable for AIR’s requirements, particularly because it offers analogue and digital functionality and its ease of operation is second to none. The system will be used extensively during the overhaul of AIR’s infrastructure as it transitions to digital broadcasting, and we are delighted to be able to offer this state-of-the art solution at this key stage in AIR’s development.”

Prism Sound’s dScope Series III includes precision analogue and highly-optimised digital outputs and inputs. Precise and automatic gain-ranging enables high resolution measurements over a massive range, from a few micro-volts to more than 150 volts RMS, and from less than 1 Hz to over 90kHz. Its interface processor uses dedicated DSP to provide a wide range of real time measurements, while its software uses the host PC for almost unlimited number crunching and analysis options such as Fast Fourier Transforms, unique ‘FFT Detectors’, swept sine and multi-tone testing. Designed to be highly programmable, the dScope Series III can be automated from a wide range of third-party software using Active X controls, or internally using VBScript. The system also offers a range of uniquely powerful tools for broadcasters, including logging facilities for tracking down intermittent pops and glitches in the audio stream, and metadata inconsistencies and changes of status which could lead to audible problems.

Simon Woollard, Test and Measurement Product Specialist for Prism Sound, says: “This was an important project for Prism Sound and for AIR alike, so we took the time to consult with the client in order to understand their requirements in detail. Once we knew what measurements AIR’s engineers needed, we were able to customise the appearance of the standard dScope Series III interface, using in-built user-adjustable settings. In doing so, we were able to provide a simplified menu that was easy to understand and control, even for untrained users.

“The resulting main menu offers four main sub-menus of test groups, grouped by input and output domain, plus a quick tour of the instrument and the self-test routine that AIR requested. The sub-menus then offer the operator a choice of the most commonly needed tests, e.g. frequency response, THD+N, IMD, etc, which can all be accessed from a single click. Operators can then perform their tests using the standard test profiles, or they can customise the tests according to their specific requirements.

“As with all dScope Series III instruments, automated test sequencing and reporting is also possible. We will be consulting further with AIR following their initial training and usage of the instrument to determine whether they require any further adjustments to the appearance of the instrument’s interface, or to the tests and test reporting defaults provided.

“This project is very exciting for me, as I have been involved in Prism Sound’s strategic move into the Indian market since day one, and this is one of the most significant results we have obtained since we started this campaign. This news is important for all of our customers, as it helps to strengthen our position in the region, and I look forward to working with Electro Dynamics and AIR in future as we continue to develop our audio test and measurement solutions.”

Prism Sound has already provided Digital Audio training to AIR staff and will deliver more specific dScope Series III product training during 2012. It is anticipated that AIR will place further orders in the future as it rolls dScope Series III out to other divisions.
