Audio-Technica and Celebrated Artists Support Music Education

— Nine scholarships/donations honor A-T’s 50th anniversary —

Audio-Technica, a leading innovator in transducer technology, officially kicked off its 50th Anniversary Year in the U.S. with a special gala event held January 19, 2012, during the Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. The event featured an all-star music revue produced by legendary GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Phil Ramone. Among the featured all-star cast of performers were saxophonist and longtime Audio-Technica endorser Mindi Abair, R&B/jazz vocalist Patti Austin, new age/adult-contemporary superstar and Audio-Technica endorser Jim Brickman, smooth jazz saxophonist Dave Koz, vocalist Monica Mancini, legendary trumpeter/pianist/composer Arturo Sandoval, gospel/R&B music legend BeBe Winans and Canadian jazz-pop vocalist Nikki Yanofsky. In commemoration of the event, all eight performers have decided to donate their performance honoraria to different music education programs and institutions, helping promote the importance of music education and assisting students in their pursuits.

Phil Ramone donated his honorarium to The Salvation Army’s Phil Ramone Orchestra for Children. Abair has decided to donate to the Berklee College of Music Five-Week Summer Performance Program, creating the Mindi Abair/Audio-Technica Berklee Five-Week Summer Performance Scholarship. Austin is also donating her honorarium to the Berklee College of Music. Brickman is giving to his alma mater Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM), creating the Jim Brickman/Audio-Technica Scholarship. Koz is proud to donate to the GRAMMY Camp® (held at and in partnership with the USC Thornton School of Music), creating the Dave Koz/Audio-Technica GRAMMY Camp Scholarship. Mancini selected The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, thereby creating the Monica Mancini/Audio-Technica Donation for Music Education. Sandoval chose the Young Musicians’ Camp at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, creating the Arturo Sandoval/Audio-Technica Scholarship for the Young Musicians’ Camp. Winans is donating to Juilliard’s Summer Jazz Workshops, creating the BeBe Winans/Audio-Technica Scholarship. Yanofsky has selected the Schulich School of Music and its Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT) at McGill University, creating the Nikki Yanofsky/Audio-Technica Scholarship.

Audio-Technica endorser Abair stated, “Audio-Technica has been helping me achieve my sound for more than 18 years on the road and in the studio. I was honored to play for their 50th Anniversary and even more honored to give back with a scholarship to Berklee’s five-week program. I grew up musically and personally while getting my degree at Berklee. I was encouraged to be an individual there and create my own musical vision. That’s priceless. I couldn’t be happier to pass that gift along to another individual.”

AES 132nd Convention A Hit In Budapest

Mercedes-Benz Signature Sound Audio & John Buckman Keynote Highlight Show

BUDAPEST: With over 100 paper, workshop, tutorial and networking events, 11 exhibitors and 805 attendees, the 132nd AES Convention was the most intimate yet intensive gathering in the organization’s 64-year history. Participant response to the event and, to the host city, was uniformly positive.

“Budapest exceeded our expectations as a distinctive site for our 2012 European convention,” stated AES Executive Director Bob Moses. “We attracted a number of eastern European audio professionals who had not previously had the opportunity to participate in an AES event. The feedback we received from them as well as from our traditional AES European Convention attendees was extremely positive.”

The convention was highlighted by the first surround recording, specifically mixed and mastered for the exotic new Mercedes SL Roadster. Presented by a blue-ribbon panel which included Leslie Ann Jones of Skywalker Sound, Mario Fresner of Daimler AG, Stefan Bock, msm-studios GmbH, Norbert Niemczyk, Daimler AG, Wieslaw Woszczyk of McGill University, and moderator Herbert Waltl of LA’s mediaHYPERIUM, the event demonstrated the “ultimate surround sound car listening experience.” Technical issues behind its development were discussed at length.

Keynote speaker John Buckman, a leading online label entrepreneur and Chairman of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), provided deep insights into developing successful 21st century progressive music business models. Presentations spanning subjects from Smartphone technology to Virtual Microphones and the Beach Boys’ “Smile” sessions offered attendees invaluable insights, career tips and social networking opportunities.

Moses reports the quality of the research papers was particularly high thanks in part to a newly instituted Convention paper review process. “The turnout for Workshops and Tutorials was particularly strong,” he adds, “The rooms were packed and, while the exhibition was smaller than we had hoped, we deeply appreciate the support of Audiomonde, Auro Technologies, Charteroak, Crane Song, Delta Senselab, Linear Audio, Microtech Gefell, Neutrik, Profusion and Roland Systems Group East Europe. Our post-show conversations with them clearly substantiate their palpable sense of having made the right judgment call in being with us. “The 132nd Convention clearly confirms the importance of continuing the AES European show. We are already in the planning stages for our next event, and will be incorporating changes our stakeholders are requesting to add value and ensure its long term success” Moses concludes.

Commenting on his reaction to the 132nd Convention, David Josephson of Josephson Engineering who shared a booth with Crane Song, AEA and Hitspace remarked, “The show was really worthwhile. We saw a lot of students and pro users. The technical sessions seemed stronger and better attended than the last London show. We went because it was the first time we could reach out to buyers in Eastern Europe. The opportunity for seeing significant people is absolutely worth attending an event like this.”

Sistema Globo de Radio Installs NETIA Radio-Assist(TM) 8 to Streamline News Production Across Its Four Largest Brazilian Stations

CLARET, France — May 2, 2012 — NETIA, a leading software manufacturer of media asset management and radio automation solutions, today announced that Sistema Globo de Radio – SGR is installing the Radio-Assist(TM) 8 suite of digital audio automation software across its facilities in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Brasilia, and Belo Horizonte to simplify and streamline radio production operations from end to end.

“We needed a software solution that would enable us to schedule and play out programming from studios, exchange content among multiple sites, and archive content — all while interfacing with existing systems in a very heterogeneous environment,” said Marco Tulio Nascimento, technology manager for SGR. “NETIA’s Radio-Assist 8 offered us all of these capabilities, integrating smoothly into our operations to support staff throughout the production and playout workflow.”

The four SGR sites at which Radio-Assist 8 is being installed are responsible for the broadcast of programs on Radio Globo (talk show), Globo FM (Web), Beat98 (pop music), BH FM (pop music), and CBN (all news), a network of stations that reaches more than 30 cities across Brazil. Integrated with SGR’s existing iNEWS newsroom system through a MOS protocol, Radio-Assist 8 will make it simple for journalists to work on a story, incorporating any news from Avid software, rewriting it, adding sound from the Radio-Assist 8 database, and then organizing the content to be broadcast.

All four sites will be interconnected, with the ability to share content. As a result, journalists working simultaneously can exchange media in a more collaborative production process. Across SGR operations, 250 workstations will be equipped with the NETIA Radio-Assist 8 software. The software has been adapted by NETIA to meet SGR’s cultural and linguistic requirements with a special focus on customizing the database structure. The Radio-Assist 8 GUI has been translated into Portuguese, and local training for staff in Brazil also is in Portuguese.

PRISM SOUND OPENS A NEW EUROPEAN SALES AND DISTRIBUTION OFFICE IN GERMANY

Prism Sound, manufacturer of premium-quality test and measurement instruments, audio interfaces and processors and for the recording and broadcast markets, has opened a European Sales and Distribution office in Munich, Germany.

Operating under the Prism Media Products Ltd banner and covering the territories of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the new office will handle all Prism Sound test and measurement, music recording and production products including the dScope Series III audio test instrument, ADA-8XR multichannel converters and the Orpheus FireWire interface.

Bernard Nocker, formerly Sales Manager for Prism Sound products at DIME Medientechnik GmbH, has been appointed to head the Munich office.

Prism Sound and DIME have agreed a swift and amicable handover, with DIME now completing only specific orders already in hand. All new orders will be handled directly by Prism Sound. Warranty and service for all products formerly sold by DIME or by its predecessor SDI will be handled directly by Prism Sound through the Munich office.

Sales of Prism Sound’s SADiE product line continue to be handled by For-Tune GmbH. The new arrangements in Germany will mean closer co-operation between the two companies and offer a range of new marketing opportunities for the SADiE and Prism Sound brands.

RADIO MAGAZINE RECOGNIZES RTW WITH A PICK HIT AWARD

Las Vegas – 2012 NAB Show – April 26, 2012 – Radio magazine, the radio technology leader published by NewBay Media, announced the winners of the Pick Hit Awards for the 2012 NAB Show. The Radio magazine Pick Hits panel selects the top 20 new products introduced at the convention.

This year, RTW earned one of the coveted Pick Hit Awards for its TM3 TouchMonitor. Barix Reflector Audio Over IP Solution Supports Network-Wide Delivery for CRIS Radio

Connecticut’s only Radio Reading Service uses Barix Reflector service to significantly reduce costs and reliably deliver audio between several studios

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND
Barix is exclusively supporting IP audio delivery between multiple studios and transmitter sites for Connecticut Radio Information System (CRIS Radio), Connecticut’s only radio reading service for the blind. The non-profit broadcaster uses the company’s innovative Reflector Service for audio stream delivery. CRIS Radio is also reducing costs by using the new Barix Reflector App to monitor on-air feeds in real-time from an iPhone.

CRIS Radio is a talking newsstand for the blind and visually impaired, featuring newspaper and magazine articles, book readings and interviews. The broadcaster operates out of Windsor, Connecticut, and transmits programming from four satellite studios to specially tuned radios, cable TV systems, home telephones and to the web at http://www.crisradio.org.

Barix Exstreamer 500 IP audio hardware supports audio transport between headquarters and the remote studios using the Barix Reflector service, with 16 devices in operation across the network. This complete solution from Barix simplifies setting up, operating and monitoring the audio distribution and reduces costs — two significant benefits for CRIS Radio given its small staff and non-profit status.

John Galeota, consulting engineer for CRIS Radio, estimates that the Barix solution saves the company about $9,000 a year in Telco charges by eliminating legacy devices and twisted-pair connections. He notes that the Barix solution is robust and reliable, offering stable and effective audio streams with the right tools to help him manage the entire network.

“The Exstreamer 500 and Reflector Service provide a solid and reliable foundation for growth as we add new locations,” said Galeota. “I can program the 500s from anywhere, add them to the network using the Reflector Service and plug in the devices at the studio — and they work. These are mostly unattended, automated studios, so the ease of configuration and operational reliability are ideal. I also like that the Exstreamer 500 has balanced audio in and out, which allows me to eliminate extra line amplifiers and transformers to maintain quality.”

Radio broadcasters and other service providers typically use the Reflector Service to stream audio between two or more points. Hosted by Barix partner StreamGuys (www.streamguys.com), the application is an online center to configure and monitor the audio transport bridge while providing a straightforward relay of the audio feed. The service offers IP streaming without the complexity of IP, eliminating firewall hassles and the need to configure IP addresses and routing paths.

Galeota adds that the Reflector App reduces time spent on the road traveling between studios to fix on-air problems — a significant benefit as the studios are at least 60 miles apart — and points out that the combined customer support efforts of Barix and StreamGuys has been enormously helpful.

“Technical support is critical for someone like me working at a non-profit,” said Galeota. “The support from Barix and StreamGuys is unlike anything I’ve experienced in all my years in the business. They respond promptly, courteously and effectively whenever we have a question.”
