RedNet Powers AV Operations at 2014 FIFA World Cup Final Draw

Los Angeles, CA, May 5, 2014 – Focusrite’s RedNet range of network audio interfaces are playing a key role in the live broadcast and recording of some of Brazil’s biggest entertainment events. Recently, Brazilian outside broadcast (OB) company Mix2Go invested in multiple RedNet units as part of their wider digital audio/visual network for the broadcast and recording of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final Draw event.

Like most professionals working in live sound, remote recording and broadcast, sound engineers Daniel Reis and Beto Neves from Mix2Go have adopted Audinate’s Dante platform for all their networked audio. Their OB truck features a Dante-enabled Allen & Heath mixing console and stage racks, which route audio from the stage to any device connected to the Dante network. This enables the team to route signals to a multitude of different recording, mixing and live-broadcast systems simultaneously, while giving them the opportunity to upgrade and expand their network, simply by connecting more Dante devices to their gigabit switches.

Daniel is no stranger to Dante technology, or to the sound quality that Focusrite gear provides. “I started using Dante back when the Dolby Lake loudspeaker management system came out, and was amazed by how it gave you access to a whole new world. I’ve also used a lot of the Focusrite ISA products, so when I heard about RedNet, it was great news: finally a company committed to sound quality had invested in the best protocol available.”

Mix2Go use a RedNet 2 16-channel A-D/D-A interface, the RedNet 3 32-channel digital I/O, a RedNet 6 MADI Bridge and three RedNet PCIe cards. “I need to give the option of delivering the program through MADI, AES/EBU or analog,” says Daniel. For the FIFA World Cup Final Draw, the team decided their RedNet 2 was an excellent choice to deliver the final live mixes to the video OB truck. They also used their RedNet 3 as an additional monitoring reference via the AES/EBU outputs.

Incorporating the RedNet gear into their somewhat complex setup was incredibly fast and simple, thanks to the straightforward nature of the Dante network and the rock-solid reliability of the RedNet interfaces. “Installing RedNet was very fast – plug-and-play – and almost idiot proof,” Daniel recalls.

One of the main benefits of using RedNet, and the wider Dante network, is its ability to send large amounts of audio over long distances with minimum cabling. The setup for the Final Draw event consisted of a large Dante network that linked two OB trucks parked in different locations outside the venue to the main stage. Two stage boxes (one primary and one backup) were located in the main arena, connected to gigabit network switches using Cat-6 cables. Signals from this stage rig were sent via multi-mode fiber cables to another pair of switches inside the music OB truck, about 150ft (50m) away. Inside the truck, the fiber signal was converted back to Ethernet and routed to two Mac Mini computers, which handled the multi-track recording, using Pro Tools and Audinate’s Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS) driver. The signals from stage were also routed simultaneously to the live mix console, from where the final broadcast stems were then routed to RedNet 2, located inside the video OB truck, about 100ft (30m) away. Here, the stems were converted to analog then mixed with the rest of the event’s audio and added to the final video feed, which was then sent to a distribution truck to be broadcast to television stations all around the world.

After the event, Daniel was extremely happy with how the RedNet equipment performed. “The converters sound transparent and tight. RedNet has truly given us reliability and quality, and pride to have such amazing equipment from a brand that we truly respect.”

Dietrich Schüller to Deliver the Heyser Memorial Lecture Tomorrow at the 136th Audio Engineering Society International Convention

New York, NY, April 25, 2013 — The 136th Audio Engineering Society International Convention, being held in Berlin, Germany, on April 26 – 29, 2014, at the Estrel Hotel and Convention Center, will feature Dietrich Schüller, early advocate of digital audiovisual archiving, giving the Richard C. Heyser Memorial Lecture, one of the most anticipated events at every AES Convention. With his strong international engagement for audiovisual preservation and background experience in physics, ethnomusicology and cultural anthropology, Schüller will explain how technological development has led to a paradigm shift 25 years ago and the ways in which safeguarding the world’s audiovisual has further developed since. The lecture will take place Saturday, April 26, 19:00 – 20:00 (Estrel Hall A).

Schüller originally joined the Phonogrammarchiv of the Austrian Academy of Sciences – the world’s first sound archive founded 1899 – as a student assistant and, following graduation, became its Director in 1972. After concentration on methodological aspects of sound recording for research purposes, he became increasingly engaged in audiovisual preservation and re-recording. He was a member of the Executive Board of the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) from 1975 to 1987, founder of the IASA Technical Committee and its chair until 2001. He is a member of the Audio Engineering Society, was a member of the Organizing Committee of the Vienna AES Conventions 1992 and 2007, and Vice-Chair of the AES Standards Subcommittee on Audio Preservation and Restoration until its closure in 2012. Schüller currently serves as UNESCO Vice-President of the Information for All Programme (IFAP), and chair of the IFAP Working Group on Information Preservation. An author of numerous publications on audiovisual preservation, he is also involved in national and international training courses and workshops for audiovisual archivists.

“The change of paradigm in audio preservation” Schüller reports “started 25 years ago in an informal environment around AES Conventions in the US. The first pilot projects, however, were established by German radio stations in the early 1990s, later followed by television archives. Adequate standards have been established, and we continue to adapt these to the development of the technical environment. I am looking forward to delivering the Heyser lecture at the Berlin convention, to sharing my experience of the development of audiovisual preservation, but also my concerns: specifically magnetic tapes are under threat by the rapid disappearance of replay machines. If not transferred in time to digital repositories, contents will be lost, even if the tapes are still in good physical condition.”

The Richard C. Heyser Memorial Lecture series was established in May 1999 by the AES Technical Council, the Board of Governors and the Richard Heyser Scholarship Fund to honor the extensive contribution to the Society by Heyser, widely known for his ability to communicate new and complex technical ideas with great clarity and patience. The Heyser Series is an endowment for lectures that bring to AES conventions eminent individuals in audio engineering and related fields. Like Dietrich Schüller, many previous lecturers were also exceptional across creative, technical and entrepreneurial roles, including Ray Dolby, Ray Kurzweil, Walter Murch, Phil Ramone and George Massenburg.

136th Audio Engineering Society Convention to Feature Keynote from Leading Audio Researcher Wieslaw Woszczyk

— Opening ceremony to feature remarks from Woszczyk and AES personnel —

New York, NY, April 23, 2014 — The 136th Audio Engineering Society Convention (Saturday, April 26, through Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at the Estrel Hotel and Convention Center in Berlin, Germany) is set to feature a keynote address from Wieslaw Woszczyk, an internationally recognized audio researcher and educator with leading expertise in emerging technology trends in audio. The address will be part of the convention’s opening ceremonies, taking place Saturday, April 26, 13:15-14:15 (Estrel Hall A). The ceremonies will also feature remarks from AES President Sean Olive; AES Executive Director Bob Moses; Convention Co-chairs Sascha Spors and Umberto Zanghieri; and Awards Chair Jan Abildgaard Pedersen.

Woszczyk holds the James McGill Professor Research Chair position and a full professorship at McGill University, and is the founding director of the Graduate Program in Sound Recording (1978), and founding director of the CIRMMT Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology, an inter-university, inter-faculty, interdisciplinary research center established at McGill University in 2001. An AES member since 1976, Woszczyk is a Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society (1996) and the former Chair of its Technical Council (1996-2005), Governor (twice, in 1991-1993 and 2008-2010) and President (2006-2007). He also served on the Review Board of the AES Journal. Woszczyk received the Board of Governors Award in 1991 and a group Citation Award in 2001 for “pioneering the technology enabling collaborative multichannel performance over the broadband Internet.”

Woszczyk notes, “The world of audio is entering a period of renaissance. We are experiencing an unprecedented range of technologies serving artists, producers, and listeners of music and sound. Little remains the same for long in the face of our relentless drive for new discoveries. I would like to present my perspective on the value of human interaction, collaboration and continuing education as a way forward in the quickly transforming world.
