SAN FRANCISCO: The 129th AES Convention will open with a bang on Thursday, Nov. 4, when veteran engineer/producer and studio owner Robert Margouleff presents the event’s Keynote Address at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Margouleff will bring his unique perspective of more than 40 years working in pro audio in an address titled “What The Hell Happened?” He plans to examine the influence of fast-paced technological developments on creativity – both for better and for worse – and the creative artist’s needs in a technological world.
“Yes, we’ve had a digital revolution in music and film, shifting power away from a few big companies and toward greater access,” says Margouleff. “But we must not forget the importance of collaboration among talented artists, engineers and business people that built an entertainment industry that changed the world.” more…

— Turnkey Monitor Tuning Protocol Provides World Class Performance Even in Nightmare Acoustic Environments —
Nashville, TN: Continuing the trend of the engineer / producer / musician / songwriter needing his or her own studio, Nashville’s Kyle Lee (Michael W. Smith, TobyMac) accepted an invitation to become part of a larger studio complex that housed several other artists, engineers and producers. The space he was given was a former overdub booth that would be his control room. The list of egregious acoustic anomalies included a small lopsided cone-shaped room; a commercial dropped ceiling; and only high frequency absorption with a little foam in two corners. “No matter what positioning I tried with the speakers, the center imaging was vague and I just couldn’t find any low end, says Lee, “even though my monitors were spec’ed to go down to 45Hz. I used a small subwoofer and that just confused the issue, adding a one-note bass quality to the sound.
Enter Carl Tatz Design (CTD) and the PhantomFocusâ„¢ System monitor tuning enhancement protocol that was able to essentially ignore the room problems. “I love tough rooms like this because the transformation is so dramatic,â€? explains Tatz. more…

“In support of our commitment to widen our focus on vital issues the 129th Convention will link three panels in a dedicated Streaming Track,” Bialik says. “In just the past 12 months since our last convention we have witnessed the rapid, almost universal embrace of Streaming. The resolution of issues such as Stream Formats are becoming increasingly urgent. The AES Convention represents an ideal forum for these discussions,” Bialik concludes. more…
